February 09, 2004 | Cowboy Basketball
AMES, Iowa (AP) -- Ivan McFarlin and John Lucas scored 21 points each and No. 13 Oklahoma State got one easy basket after another in beating Iowa State 88-67 Saturday.
Oklahoma State (17-2, 7-1 Big 12) kept its composure after Iowa State jumped to an early eight-point lead and came up with a dominating performance in handing the Cyclones their first loss in 13 home games.
Quicker and more athletic, the Cowboys shot 67 percent (18-for-27) in the first half and 63 percent for the game. They were so efficient that Iowa State (13-6, 4-4) was shooting 58.5 percent with six minutes left and still trailed by 13.
Tony Allen added 18 points for Oklahoma State, which has won seven straight by an average margin of 10.4 points after starting Big 12 play with an 83-62 loss at Texas Tech. Jake Sullivan led Iowa State with 21 and Curtis Stinson scored 19.
McFarlin benefited from good position on the block and crisp passes from his teammates while making nine of 12 shots, none more than 2 feet from the basket. Lucas was 7-for-12 from the field, including 5-for-8 from 3-point range, and handed out five assists. Allen was 7-for-9 and grabbed eight rebounds.
Oklahoma State expanded a 39-30 halftime to lead 56-42 in the first seven minutes of the second half, then survived Iowa State's only threat.
Jackson Vroman's layup and Sullivan's fifth 3-pointer of the game cut the lead to 61-55 and brought the crowd to life. Lucas quickly silenced it. He came off a screen and hit a 3 from the top of the key, starting an 11-2 run that made it 72-57.
Iowa State had no answer.
The Cyclones made their first five shots, including a pair of 3-pointers by Sullivan, in jumping to a 12-4 lead. Then they went scoreless for the next 4 1/2 minutes and Oklahoma State ran off nine straight points to quickly get back in it.
Then the Cowboys started beating the Cyclones to the basket for close-in shots. After Lucas hit a long 3-pointer to tie the score at 16, Oklahoma State got inside for its next nine baskets.
A 10-2 run erased a 20-18 Iowa State lead and put Oklahoma State ahead to stay. Lucas capped that burst with an athletic play, leaping to catch a pass, twisting in mid-air and banking in a shot to make it 28-22.
Later, Lucas blew past Stinson for a layup that gave the Cowboys a 36-30 lead and his 3-pointer with five seconds left in the half made it 39-30.
Stinson left the game with 2:27 remaining with a groin injury, but it was not thought to be serious.
