Cowgirl Basketball Set To Take On Nebraska
February 10, 2004 | Cowgirl Basketball
Oklahoma State's women's basketball team (8-13 overall, 3-7 Big 12) will look to snap a three-game losing streak on Wednesday when it takes on Nebraska (15-6, 5-5) at 7 p.m. in Lincoln. The Cowgirls are coming off a 75-52 home loss to Texas, while the Huskers defeated Kansas, 59-48, last Saturday, snapping a three-game slide of their own.
SCOUTING THE HUSKERS
Connie Yori's club has already improved on last season's overall win total by seven games and its conference total by four. The Huskers are led in scoring by guard Keasha Cannon-Johnson, who is averaging 11.5 points per outing and is also pulling a team-best 8.4 rebounds per contest. Guard Jina Johansen is currently fourth in the Big 12 in assists, dishing out 4.86 per game. Nebraska holds a 26-23 margin in the all-time series after defeating the Cowgirls last year, 73-59, in Stillwater for their lone conference victory. OSU won the last meeting in Lincoln, 72-66, in 2002.
WHAT 2 WATCH 4
A Cowgirl win would be its second road win of the season and first conference win away from Stillwater this year ... an OSU win would surpass both its overall and conference win totals from a year ago.
UP NEXT
The Cowgirls will return home to take on their second consecutive Big 12 North Division opponent when the Missouri Tigers come calling for a 6 p.m. contest on Saturday in Stillwater. The two squads met twice last season with the Tigers claiming an 87-65 victory in Columbia before the Cowgirls earned a series split with a 56-54 win in the second round of the Big 12 Tournament. The overall series stands at 23-20 in favor of Mizzou.
LAST TIME OUT
STILLWATER, Okla. (AP) ÂHeather Schreiber scored 19 points and Jamie Carey had 13 to help No. 3 Texas stake its claim to the nation's top ranking with a 75-52 victory over Oklahoma State on Saturday. Texas won its seventh straight game and extended its conference lead over No. 11 Colorado to one game. The Longhorns, who haven't been ranked No. 1 since Dec. 1987, could become the nation's next top-ranked team following losses earlier this week by No. 1 Tennessee and No. 2 Duke. The more talented and tenacious Longhorns had little trouble putting this one away. Texas went on a 17-3 run late in the first half en route to a 33-26 lead at the break, aided by a nearly five-minute scoreless drought by Oklahoma State. Early in the second half, the Longhorns had a 15-2 spurt. Texas led by as many as 26 points in the game's final minutes. Stacy Stephens added 10 points and eight rebounds for the Longhorns.
