Cowgirl Basketball Set To Open Regular Season
November 18, 2004 | Cowgirl Basketball
ABOUT NICHOLLS STATE Saturday's contest will be the first for the Colonels under first-year head coach Mark Cook. Last season, Nicholls State opened the season with a 93-44 loss at Baylor before finishing the season 2-25 overall and 0-12 on the road.
The Cowgirls have won both meetings against Nicholls State, posting a 56-53 win on Feb. 8, 1980 in Houston before routing the Colonels, 109-56, on Dec. 15, 1996 in Stillwater. OSU's offensive output in the latter game tied the second-highest single-game point production in school history, trailing only its 112-point outburst against Tulsa in 1978 and matching its 109-point effort against Phillips in 1976.
OSU IN SEASON OPENERS Oklahoma State has had marked success in season openers throughout the history of the program. After losing five of their first six season-opening contests, the Cowgirls have won 21 of their last 25. OSU has been even more impressive in its home openers, winning 26 of its 31 games. Last season, the Cowgirls stunned then-No. 24 Michigan State to open the home slate.
WHAT 2 WATCH 4 A Cowgirl win would improve them to 23-9 all-time in season openers ... a victory would also be the first time in three seasons the Cowgirls have opened with a win under head coach Julie Goodenough ... a win would improve OSU to 3-0 all-time against Nicholls State ... a win would end a 10-game losing streak dating back to the Cowgirls' 61-74 loss at Kansas on Jan. 31.
UP NEXT The Cowgirls will continue their homestand when they host New Mexico on Tuesday. Tip-off has been moved to approximately 8:15 p.m. or 30 minutes following the Cowboys' 6 p.m. contest against Arkansas-Little Rock. Fans that come to the men's game may stay for the women's game without re-entering Gallagher-Iba Arena.
