Tonight's Game Oklahoma State and Colorado, locked in a five-way tie for fourth place in the Big 12 entering this week's play, square off tonight as the second half of the league season begins. Both teams will try to emerge from the pack with a victory as the league's teams jockey for their league tournament seeds.
OSU-Colorado: The Series OSU owns a 51-42 advantage in the all-time series and a 31-10 edge in Stillwater. The Cowboys had won nine straight over the Buffs until CU rallied for a thrilling overtime victory last year in Boulder. OSU head coach Eddie Sutton is 13-3 in his career against Colorado.
OSU Head Coach Eddie Sutton Eddie Sutton (Oklahoma State, 1958) is in his eighth year at OSU and his 28th year of collegiate coaching. Under his guidance, OSU has advanced to the NCAA Tournament five times. Sutton currently owns a career record of 601-238 (71.6 percent) overall and is 171-74 (69.8 percent) at OSU. Sutton is just the seventh coach to reach 600 wins in 28 or fewer seasons.
About the Buffaloes Colorado enters tonight's game with a 10-8 overall record and, like OSU, a 4-4 mark in Big 12 play. The Buffs have won four of their last five games, including victories over two teams (Baylor and Missouri) that defeated OSU earlier this year. Kenny Price (14.2 ppg) leads three CU players who average double figures in scoring; Ronnie DeGray (13.2 ppg, 7.8 rpg) is second on the team in scoring and first in rebounding.

Cowboys scoring at highest rate in eight years OSU averaged 69.4 points per game in 1996-97, making last season's team the lowest-scoring Cowboys in 20 years, and they were out-scored by their combined opponents for the first time since 1988. But this season, OSU is averaging 81.2 points per game (which would be the highest scoring average under Eddie Sutton and third-best in school history) and out-scoring its opponents by an average of 11.4 points. The Cowboys have reached the century mark in two games this season after failing to score 100 in the past two years and have already had more 80-point games this season (nine) than in either of the past two seasons.
OSU tries to reverse 1997's road blues OSU tied a school record with 14 victories at home last year, but the Cowboys were just 1-12 on the road and lost their first nine games in unfriendly territory. The Cowboys appear to be reversing that trend in 1997-98, with a 3-3 road record that includes victories at TCU and Oklahoma. OSU has already won more games away from Gallagher-Iba Arena (four including neutral-site contests) than it did in 16 tries last season, and the Cowboys are aiming for their first winning road record in four years. Surprisingly, the Cowboys' road three-point shooting percentage (38.8 percent) is better than their home percentage (26.1), and OSU has more threes in six road games (45) than in 11 home games (42).
Charting the Cowboys' improvement The 1996-97 Cowboys committed 90 more turnovers than their opponents, marking the team's first season with a negative turnover margin in four years, and for the first time since 1988, OSU opponents went to the line more often than the Cowboys. But those statistics have both turned around in OSU's 14-4 start to the 1997-98 year. The Cowboys' turnover margin is a Big 12-best +3.2 per game, and the Cowboys have attempted 108 more free throws than their opponents.
Texas' red-hot shooting beats Cowboys OSU led Texas 21-18, 12 minutes into the teams' game on Saturday. But from that point, the Longhorns went on a 23-2 run, hitting seven consecutive three-point attempts. For the game, Texas shot 59.1 percent from beyond the arc as they handed the Cowboys their worst defeat this season.
Robisch picks up the scoring pace Senior center Brett Robisch has averaged 18.3 points and 8.0 rebounds in the past three games. He hit just 1 of 5 field goal attempts in the second half of the Oklahoma game, but excluding that half, he has hit 65.6 percent from the field in the last three contests. He led the Cowboys in scoring at Texas with 21. Robisch recorded his seventh double-double of the season at Oklahoma, scoring 12 points and pulling down 11 rebounds for a key performance in the Cowboys' victory. In addition, he had four assists and a career-high four steals but had no turnovers in 38 minutes. Despite playing just two seasons, Robisch already ranks seventh in school history with nine double-doubles. He leads OSU in rebounding (8.5 rpg, fourth in the Big 12) and is third on the team in scoring (14.6 ppg, 14th in the Big 12).
Hot shooting, lack of turnovers lead to big win at OU OSU shot 60.7 percent from the field in the second half and committed a season-low 10 turnovers in picking up a key 88-84 victory at Oklahoma on Jan. 26. The Cowboys won despite trailing by 12 points in the second half and despite being out-rebounded 38-23. OSU has won seven of the last 10 games in the Bedlam series but had not won in Norman since 1994.
Mason leads OSU to victory, caps game with dunk With 50 seconds remaining Monday, Oklahoma had cut the Cowboys' lead to two and had installed a full-court press. But sophomore forward Desmond Mason broke long, took senior center Brett Robisch's perfect length-of-the-court pass and scored with a thunderous dunk. Mason also was intentionally fouled on the play; after sinking one free throw, he hit two more charities on the ensuing possession to ice the game. Mason finished with a team-high 21 points, 15 in the second half, and now averages 15.8 ppg, 11th in the Big 12. His 7.4 rebounds-per-game average is second on the team and ninth in the league.
Alexander keys Cowboy run to overtake Sooners Senior guard Chad Alexander scored 15 points, a season high and his best tally ever in a conference game, against Oklahoma. He scored 12 points in the second half, eight of which came during a key 12-2 second-half run after OSU had trailed 57-48. The run was punctuated by Alexander's third three-pointer of the game, which gave OSU its first lead. Alexander has hit 18 of his last 41 three-pointers (43.9 percent) and ranks ninth in school history in three-pointers made (85) and eighth in three-point percentage (38.1).
Adkins can't miss against A&M Sophomore guard Joe Adkins struggled in OSU's loss at Missouri, going 1 for 10 from the field and scoring just three points. But he has averaged 16.8 points in the three games since and was 7 for 7 from the field in the home game against Texas A&M, scoring 16 points and handing out a career-high-tying six assists. Averaging 12.8 points and leading the team in three-pointers made (27), he has made a remarkable improvement from his freshman season, when he averaged 3.8 points and hit just 18 threes all year. Adkins recorded a career-high eight assists at Texas and committed just two turnovers.
Peterson gets hot as Cowboys reach Big 12 play Junior guard Adrian Peterson has scored in double figures in seven of OSU's eight conference games - and that's just been after halftime. He tied a career high with 27 points at Missouri, hitting a season-best three three-pointers and draining 8 of 9 free throws. He set a new career best with a 29-point effort at Baylor, draining 22 of those points after the break. OSU's leading scorer (16.4 ppg), Peterson has turned his scoring up a notch in conference play (18.3 ppg) and is ninth in the league in scoring.
Peterson has been one of OSU's top scorers over his two-plus seasons at OSU, but he has added a new dimension to his game this season - rebounding. "Pete" pulled down 10 boards to go along with his 27 points against Missouri, and he has the first four double-doubles of his career this season. Peterson's career rebounding high (seven) prior to this year is barely above his current average (6.7), which ranks 14th in the Big 12.
Gottlieb passes his way into the record books Sophomore guard Doug Gottlieb has 123 assists and just 47 turnovers, a 2.62 assist/turnover ratio (best in the Big 12). Gottlieb had a career-high 12 assists against North Texas, tying for the seventh-best single-game mark in school history, and he is the first OSU player to record double-figure assist totals in three consecutive games. Just 18 games into his OSU career, Gottlieb is already tied for second in school history in double-figure assist games (five). He recorded the first double-double of his career with 11 points and 10 rebounds in the home game against Texas A&M.
Montonati makes the most of increased playing time Sophomore forward Brian Montonati had played no more than eight minutes in any game until he was thrust into the lineup at the end of the Baylor game with Robisch and Alex Webber having fouled out. Montonati has averaged 12.0 minutes in the past four games; against the Aggies and again at Texas, he scored 10 points, two off his career high, and he had a career-best seven rebounds at Texas. Montonati has scored in double figures three times this season.
Sutton achieves victory No. 600 OSU's Jan. 24 victory over Texas A&M gave Cowboy coach Eddie Sutton the 600th coaching triumph of his career and his 100th coaching victory in Gallagher-Iba Arena. Sutton is the 20th coach in Division I history to reach the 600-victory mark, and he is just the seventh coach to reach it in 28 years or less, joining Denny Crum, Bob Knight, Adolph Rupp, Dean Smith, Jerry Tarkanian and John Wooden.
Among active coaches, Sutton ranks 14th in winning percentage and ninth in victories. Only three active coaches (Crum, Knight and Tarkanian) rank ahead of Sutton in both victories and winning percentage. Sutton, who previously coached at Creighton, Arkansas and Kentucky, is the only coach in NCAA history to lead four different schools to the national tournament. With Sutton and Henry P. Iba among the 600-win club, OSU is one of only three schools - joining Illinois (Gene Bartow and Lou Henson) and Kentucky (Sutton and Adolph Rupp) - with two coaches among the all-time top 20.
Streak intact as OSU closes non-league home season OSU's home-court non-conference streak is now over 11 years old, and barring a postseason home loss, it will extend to the 1998-99 season. OSU's 78-game non-league win streak at Gallagher-Iba Arena is the longest such current streak in the country; Maryland has the second-longest streak at 58 games. The Cowboys' last non-conference loss in Gallagher-Iba was an 81-75 setback against Missouri Southern on Jan. 7, 1987, and the last Division I non-conference opponent to win in Stillwater was Tulsa in a 67-58 decision Dec. 21, 1985.
Cowboy frosh of 1997 are top sophs in 1998 Much was made of OSU's freshman class last season, and although three of the five freshmen suffered season-ending injuries, the remaining two - Adkins and Mason - showed promise, particularly at the end of the year. Both have played well as sophomores, and they are currently the second- and third-ranked sophomore scorers in the Big 12, with Mason averaging 15.8 points and Adkins 12.8.
Noting the Cowboys
* Alex Webber pulled down a season-high five rebounds and recorded a career-high three assists against Texas A&M.
* Football teammates Joe Phears and B.J. Tiger played their first basketball games as Cowboys in Saturday's Texas A&M game.
* OSU is 4-3 in games in which it has trailed by 10 points or more. The Cowboys are 10-1 when holding a double-digit lead at some point during the game.
* Redshirt freshman guard Estell Laster has withdrawn from school, the Cowboys announced this week. Laster had been suspended before the Texas game due to violations of team rules. He averaged 3.1 points and 1.3 rebounds in 14 games this season.
Looking ahead OSU will try to gain revenge for a double-overtime loss when Baylor visits Stillwater on Saturday. The game tips off at 12:45 p.m. and will be televised on the Big 12 TV network. OSU then hits the road for a Monday contest at Iowa State before returning home again for a Valentine's Day game with Oklahoma.
Head Coach Eddie Sutton Eddie Sutton (Oklahoma State, 1958) has coached for seven-plus years at his alma mater with a 171-74 record at the school as well as a 601-238 overall mark in his 28th year of collegiate coaching. Coaches vs. Cancer Cowboy coach Eddie Sutton is joining his NABC colleagues in participating in the Coaches vs. Cancer program this season. The Coaches vs. Cancer IKON Three-Point Attack is a fund-raising program that recruits fans to help fight cancer. Cowboy Radio Network Tonight's game will be broadcast on the OSU Radio Network with Tom Dirato and Bill Teegins providing commentary. Dirato and Teegins are in their seventh year as the Cowboys' basketball radio team, and Dirato is calling OSU men's basketball for the 21st season in 1997-98 and called his 600th OSU game against Texas A&M, the same day as Coach Sutton's 600th victory. Dirato and Teegins were unable to make the Cowboys' trip to Columbia on Jan. 14 due to icy weather in central Missouri. However, they were able to perform their game duties from Stillwater by watching the game on satellite TV in OSU's Educational Television Services building. Engineer Joe Riddle, on site in Columbia, combined the on-air commentary with the actual sounds of the game in the Hearnes Center, and the broadcast proceeded without a hitch.
Television coverage Tonight's game will not be televised. However, Saturday's game with Baylor will be broadcast on the Big 12 TV network with Kevin Slaten and Reid Gettys providing commentary. The Baylor game can be seen in Oklahoma on KFOR (channel 4) in Oklahoma City and on KJRH (channel 2) in Tulsa.
