Cowgirls Win Two in Bertha Teague Classic
June 09, 2003 | Cowgirl Basketball
Senior Megan Gregg was named to the all-tournament team for her performance in both games. The Beaver, Okla., native scored 28 points in the tournament on 11- of-15 shooting from the floor. She also made 6-of-7 free throws.
OSU's win over Stephen F. Austin brings some relief after a loss to Long Beach State a week ago. SFA was receiving votes in the most recent USA Today/ESPN Coaches' poll. It gives the Cowgirls a second win over a top 40 team this year after the 67-54 win over then-20th ranked Vanderbilt earlier in the month.
The Cowgirls opened the game Tuesday night vs. Denver on a tear, scoring 10 points in the first three minutes before DU finally got on the scoreboard. OSU led by as many as 15 on three occasions in the first half, including a 37-22 lead at halftime. Gregg scored 12 points to lead all scorers in the first period.
OSU opened the second half much like the first, scoring seven unanswered points to go up, 44-22. The Cowgirls led by as many as 33 points before DU cut the lead down to 28 for the final score of 76-48.
Senior Nikki Harmon also scored in double figures with 12, as did junior Jennifer Crow with 10. Gregg led all rebounders with seven boards.
In Monday night's game, Crow and sophomore center Devon Magness each recorded the second double-double of their careers as OSU ousted SFA, 82-68. Magness scored a career-high 22 points and tied her career-high with 11 rebounds while shooting 81.8 percent from the floor. Crow had 19 points and 11 boards and was 9-of-11 from the free-throw line. She also had five assists.
Despite 20-point performances by both Anitra Davis and Stephanie Whitmore, the Cowgirls limited SFA to just 29.3 percent shooting from the floor and outrebounded the LadyJacks, 46-43. Senior Kourtney Bower connected on 4-of-8 three-point shots, leading the Cowgirl aerial attack. Freshman Mandy Stuber scored a season-high 12 points off the bench.
Oklahoma State, now 8-2 on the season, will open Big 12 Conference action on Saturday, Jan. 2, as the Cowgirls travel to Manhattan, Kan., to face the Kansas State Wildcats. KSU is 6-3 entering Wednesday night's contest with Santa Clara.
