Cowgirls Defeat Southwest Texas, 75-62
June 09, 2003 | Cowgirl Basketball
Renee Roberts, a senior on the Cowgirl squad, scored the 1,000th point of her career on a free throw with 1:05 left in the game. She became the 12th Cowgirl to reach the prestigious mark, and now has 1,001 points in her four-year career.
The Cowgirls, which shot just 29 percent in the first half, exploded in the second, scoring 47 points on 26-of-60 (58.6 percent) shooting. OSU also hit 12- of-16 free throws in the second half, propelling the surge after leading by only two at halftime, 28-26.
"We shot the ball poorly in the first half," said OSU Coach Dick Halterman. "We shot 29 percent, but stayed in the game with our defense. We have not shot the ball well all year. But, in the second half, we shot the ball as well as we have and showed signs of breaking out."
Roberts scored just eight points, but pulled down a game-high 13 rebounds in the contest and dished out six assists. Jennifer Crow led the Cowgirl scoring attack with 15 points, while Megan Gregg scored 13, a career high.
"I was pretty pleased with (our performance)," said Southwest Texas Coach Suzanne Fox. "We've been struggling some. We ahve a new staff and a bunch of new kids in positions they haven't played before. Overall, I was pretty pleased. I thought the kids at Oklahoma State did a nice job of execution. They got the ball inside where they definitely had an advantage over us."
OSU's Cheri Edwards nearly recorded the sixth double-double of her career with 13 points and nine rebounds. Freshman center Devon Magness, who had only three points in the first half, finished with 11.
Oklahoma State (4-3) will host the Western Illinois Westerwinds on Monday, Dec. 22, in a 7 p.m. tipoff.
