Cowgirls Defeat Southwest Missouri State, 66-58
June 09, 2003 | Cowgirl Basketball
SMS took an early five-point lead 4-1/2 minutes into the game, and increased its lead to six with 12:44 remaining at 13-7. OSU came back and tied the game at 16-16, and went up by as many as nine points with 5:17 left in the first period. The Bears then went on an 8-0 run to end the half down by one at 27-26.
Oklahoma State came out cold in the second period, and SMS not only took over the lead, but got ahead by as many as eight points with 9:43 to go in the game. The Cowgirls then went on a 7-0 run to go ahead, 44-43.
OSU stayed ahead until there were 56 seconds left in the game, when a Jackie Stiles layup tied the game at 54. A jumper by Crow put the Cowgirls ahead for good, and OSU made 10-of-10 free throws in the final 0:32.
"All in all, this is one of the best team efforts that we've ever had," said OSU Coach Dick Halterman. "We had some of our starters that played extremely well. Kara (Faulk) on the boards and Jennifer (Crow) with her all-around game, both offensively and defensively."
Stiles, the nation's leading scorer, recorded 29 points for the Bears, leading all scorers. Carly Deer had 15, while Carolyn Weirick pulled down 11 rebounds.
"That's tough when you have to take somebody like her (Stiles) on defense and then try to shoot the ball also. I thought Jennifer did a great job."
Oklahoma State (4-2) will travel to Wichita, Kan., to play the Wichita State Shockers on Sunday, Dec. 5, at 2 p.m. in Levitt Arena.
