Cowgirls Defeat No. 20 Vanderbilt, 67-54
June 09, 2003 | Cowgirl Basketball
"It is a little early to call this a big win, but it really helps up because we are so young," said OSU Coach Dick Halterman. "It helps our confidence to beat a good team from the SEC. There is no question this was a good team to beat."
The Commodores (3-2) came into the game ranked 20th according to the Associated Press poll and 22nd in the USA Today/Coaches poll. Their lone loss had come at the hands of 16th-ranked Duke.
"It was a very physical game," said Vanderbilt Coach Jim Foster. "(When you're from the SEC), you have to be prepared for people to play hard against you. They're not just going to walk out on the floor and roll over dead - especially in their own gym and this time of year."
Oklahoma State shot just 41.2 percent from the floor, connecting on four three- pointers. The Cowgirls held Vandy to just 38.5 percent from the field, and the Commodores hit just 2-of-11 shots from behind the arc. OSU also made 21-of-27 free throws, including 13-of-15 in the last 3:04.
"We knew we were going to win," said Harmon. "Our team plays so well together. We complement each other with our skills. If I'm not shooting the ball well, I can give the assists, rebound, and put a few points in. Megan had a great game tonight. This was a total team effort."
Junior Jennifer Crow scored 20 points in the game, despite spraining her ankle late in the first half. Gregg also led the team with nine rebounds. Beth Ostendorf led Vanderbilt with 14 points before fouling out with 41 seconds to go.
Oklahoma State (5-0) will return to action on Saturday, Dec. 5, as the Cowgirls travel to Jonesboro, Ark., to face the Arkansas State (2-4) Lady Indians. ASU is coming off an upset win over 17th-ranked Kansas Tuesday night. Tipoff is set for 4 p.m.
Oklahoma State (5-0) made 21 of 27 free throws in the second half, including 13 of 15 in the final 3:04.
Vanderbilt (3-2), which shot only 33 percent from the field in the first half, was led by Beth Ostendorf's 14 points.
