June 09, 2003 | Cowgirl Basketball
The team will be coached by OSU's Dick Halterman and his staff of Jack Easley, Rae Rippetoe-Blair and Paula Ross.
Other members selected to the squad are Nicole Collins, Baylor; Megan Taylor, Iowa State; Jaclyn Johnson, Kansas; Nicky Ramage, Kansas State; Tracy Franklin, Missouri; Cory McDill, Nebraska; Phylesha Whaley, Oklahoma; JoRuth Woods, Texas; Prissy Sharpe, Texas A&M; and Melinda Schmucker, Texas Tech.
Colorado will not send a representative on the Big 12 tour due to a conflict with its own foreign tour this summer.
Five of the players were named to all-Big 12 Conference teams in 1998-99. Whaley, a first-team member, ranked third in the league last year in scoring, averaging 19.6 points per game. Taylor and Sharpe were named second-team All-Big 12, and Taylor helped lead the Cyclones to an "Elite Eight" finish in the NCAA Tournament last March. Sharpe was ranked in the top five in both scoring and rebounding last season, with 18.4 points and 8.9 rebounds per game.
Crow and Ramage earned third-team All-Big 12 honors last season. Crow led the league in free throw percentage at 83.2 percent, and was sixth in scoring with 17.3 points per game. Ramage was fourth in the conference in field goal percentage at 53.5 percent, and ranked in the top 16 in both scoring and rebounding.
Schmucker, the point guard for two-time defending Big 12 Champion Texas Tech, led the league in assist-to-turnover ratio last season with a ratio of 3.08. She was also third in the conference in assists per game at 5.53 per contest.
Johnson started all 33 games last season for KU, and was fourth on the team in scoring with 8.4 points per game. McDill started 31-of-33 games for the Huskers, and was fourth on the NU squad with 5.7 ppg. Franklin started 16 games and played in all 28 for the Tigers, averaging 5.5 ppg while dishing out 67 assists.
Magness started in 17-of-27 games for the Cowgirls, and the 6-7 center led OSU with 10 blocks and was fourth in scoring with 5.8 points per game. Woods started 16-of-28 games for the Longhorns, averaging 7.5 pointsand 4.3 rebounds per game. Collins played in 22 games for Baylor and started three as a true freshman. She registered 12 assists and 10 steals for the Bears.
"The overall strength of this team with be the 2-3-4 players (shooting guard, forwards), because we have a lot of talent and depth at those positions," said Halterman. "We have just one true point guard, so we're a little concerned there, because we'd like to have two players at each position. We also would like to have more size than we have (at the post). The players we've got at both the point and center positions are talented, we just wish we had a little more depth."
Other members of the travel party include Big 12 Associate Commissioner Dru Hancock and Basketball Consultant Bill Foster, Oklahoma State athletic trainer Angie Beisner and media relations coordinator Mike Noteware.
This will mark the second consecutive year the Big 12 Conference has sponsored an All-Star Foreign Tour. Last year, a men's team traveled to London, Paris, Belgium and Germany and compiled a 4-2 record under the direction of Texas Tech head men's coach James Dickey. Both tours were organized by Foster, with assistance from the Oklahoma State and Texas Tech coaching staffs.
The women's All-Star Team will meet in Dallas on Aug. 2 for two days of practice before departing for Finland on Aug. 4. The team will play six games while in Europe and return to Dallas on Aug. 15.
