Basketball Cowgirls Defeat SMU Mustangs
June 09, 2003 | Cowgirl Basketball
"Jennifer is somebody that we will count on for her last two years here," said OSU Coach Dick Halterman. Not only offensively, but I think she held their best player (Karen Blair) to 2-of-9 shooting."
"Hopefully, we will get some more help for her," added Halterman. "She has become an awful good ball player. We are running a lot of plays her direction."
Oklahoma State led by as many as 11 points midway through the first half on a jumper by Shelly Jackson that put the Cowgirls up, 21-12. But, the Mustangs battled back, tying the game at 26-all with 4:05 remaining in the period. OSU went on a 7-0 run to end the half and take a 33-26 lead into the lockerroom.
Neither team shot well from the field, with OSU connecting on just 32 percent of its shots and SMU making just 35.1 percent of its field-goal attempts. The difference was at the free-throw line, where OSU made 29-of-40 charity shots and SMU made just 14-of-27.
"It was just ugly," said OSU Coach Dick Halterman. "Right now, neither one of us is very good. I think before the year is over, we both can be pretty good. I thought our defense played pretty well."
Oklahoma State built leads up to nine points in the second half, but the Mustangs kept coming back, tying the game with 7:01 to go in the game and again at the 3:54 mark. OSU recorded eight of its final 10 points at the free-throw line, while SMU scored all three of their points in the final 3-1/2 minutes at the stripe.
"I think all the other games we have (this season) will help us," said Crow. "It's early in the season. I just hope we play stron like we have been and go throughout the season playing that way. We just have to work together as a team."
The Cowgirls return to action on Tuesday, Nov. 17, as OSU travels to Tulsa, Okla., to play the ORU Golden Eagles. Tipoff is set for 7:05 p.m.
