Cowgirls Defeat Baylor, 68-67
June 06, 2003 | Cowgirl Basketball
The pair combined for 5-of-9 shooting from behind the three-point line, as OSU hit the most three pointers in a game this season with six. Senior Cheri Edwards was 1-of-3 from the arc while scoring seven points and pulling down nine rebounds.
"This was really a big game for us," said Crow at the postgame press conference. "We were just trying to come back from our loss on Wednesday (to Texas Tech) because we weren't going to lose two in a row. When they started coming back, we didn't lose our composure and we kept getting our shots and that's what we had to do."
Oklahoma State led the game by as many as 13 points with 7:11 in the game. But, Baylor went on a 10-0 run over the next 2-1/2 minutes and even went ahead by one on a free throw by Toya Ellis at the 3:23 mark. Ellis scored a team-high 18 points for the Bears.
The Cowgirls led by two with 0:19 remaining in the game when OSU's Devon Magness fouled Tasia Wright. Wright hit the first free throw, but missed the second, and after an offensive rebound and another shot, Cowgirl Megan Gregg pulled down the board and threw an outlet pass to Sarah Boyd at the buzzer.
"I think the thing that I was impressed with more than anything was that we didn't panic in a close game," said OSU coach Dick Halterman.
The win moves Oklahoma State (11-4 overall, 4-1 in Big 12) into sole possession of third place in the Big 12 Conference. Texas Tech, an 80-40 winner over Colorado Saturday afternoon, is first with a 5-0 record, while Iowa State, a 68- 52 victor over Texas A&M, is second at 4-0. Baylor drops into a three-way tie for fourth at 3-2.
Oklahoma State will travel to Lawrence, Kan., on Jan. 21, for a game with the Kansas Jayhawks (11-3, 3-2 Big 12). Tipoff is set for 7 p.m.
