Men's Hoops Looks To Rebound Against Langston
April 09, 2003 | Cowboy Basketball
Langston Lions (1-8, 0-0 Red River) at No. 16/12 Oklahoma State Cowboys (10-1, 0-0 Big 12) Wednesday, Jan. 5, 2000 * 7:05 p.m. * OSU Radio Network Stillwater, Okla. * Gallagher-Iba Arena (6,381)
OSU-Langston: The Series Although Langston University and Oklahoma State University sit just 24 miles apart, this is the first meeting between the NAIA Division I Lions and the NCAA Division I Cowboys. It's OSU's first game against an in-state opponent other than Oklahoma, Oral Roberts or Tulsa since the Pokes defeated Oklahoma City 76-64 in the December 1982 All-College Tournament.
OSU Coach Eddie Sutton Eddie Sutton (Oklahoma State, 1958) is in his 10th year at OSU and his 30th year of collegiate coaching. Under his guidance, OSU has advanced to the NCAA Tournament seven times. Sutton currently owns a career record of 642-253 (71.7 percent) overall and is 212-89 (70.4 percent) at OSU. Sutton is just the seventh coach to reach 600 coaching victories in 28 or fewer seasons.

In the polls OSU reached a season-high No. 11 position in both major national polls before last week's loss to LSU. The Cowboys have not been higher during the regular season since the 1993-94 team climbed as high as No. 8 in early December. OSU has been ranked in nine consecutive AP polls; the Cowboys were ranked 11 straight weeks last season, a streak that was the longest since the 1990-91 and 1991-92 teams were ranked for 24 consecutive polls, including all 18 in 1991-92, just the fifth time in its history and the first since 1957-58 that an OSU team had gone wire-to-wire in the polls.
Inside the numbers Here's a statistical look at Wednesday's opponents with OSU's Big 12 rank in parentheses.

Scoring drought, LSU end OSU streak OSU scored just two field goals and five points during the last 12 minutes of the first half and never fully recovered as the team's 10-game winning streak ended at the hands of LSU on Dec. 30. The Cowboys fell behind by as much as 12 points but battled back against the unbeaten Tigers and a hostile New Orleans crowd to cut the lead to one. But LSU responded, extending the lead and then holding the Cowboys scoreless on back-to-back possessions when the Pokes had cut the lead back to two.
Despite loss, Cowboys again off to fast start Prior to the 1997-98 season, OSU men's basketball teams had started their seasons with at least six victories just once since 1969-70. Now, the Cowboys have done so twice in three years. OSU started the season 10-0, tying for the fourth-best start in school history. It's the third strong start in the Eddie Sutton era for the Cowboys, who went 20-0 in 1991-92 and 11-0 in 1997-98. Here's a quick look at the Cowboys' best season starts:
Year Start First Loss Finish Notes
1991-92 20-0 Feb. 5 at Nebraska 28-8 Preseason NIT champs; ranked
No. 2 AP at end of streak;
reached NCAA Sweet 16
1950-51 16-0 Jan. 20 at Oklahoma 29-6 Ranked No. 1 for only time in
OSU history; NCAA Final Four
1997-98 11-0 Jan. 7 vs. Nebraska 22-7 Big 12 South champs reached
NCAA Tournament second round
1914-15 10-0 at Tulsa (date n/a) 10-4 Started season with 10
victories; finished it with
four losses, all to Tulsa
1999-00 10-0 Dec. 30 vs. LSU ??? Won first 10 games by average
of 22.9 points More quick-start and streak info The Cowboys' loss to LSU snapped OSU's 10-game winning streak, and all 10 of those victories had come by double digits. It's just the second time in school history that an OSU team has strung together 10 consecutive double-digit victories. The other instance was during the 1945-46 season, when OSU, on its way to the nation's first successful NCAA championship title defense, won 11 straight by 10 or more during an overall 15-game string.
Montonati continues consistent offensive output Senior forward Brian Montonati made a name for himself as a super sub last season, scoring in double figures 11 times off the bench and doing so five times in games when he played less than 20 minutes. Although he's stepped into a starting role -- and parlayed it into four double-doubles and 10-points-plus scoring in every game -- he continues to show a knack for scoring points in small amounts of playing time. He hit 13 of 16 field-goal attempts and averaged 14.0 points in the Cowboys' tour of the west despite playing just 44 total minutes due to foul trouble.
Second-half run again keys Cowboys For the second straight game, OSU used a big second-half run to turn a narrow deficit into a big lead as the Cowboys defeated Washington 84-72 in Seattle on Dec. 21. Trailing 45-43 with 14:30 remaining, OSU scored the next 11 points over a two-minute span and never again led by fewer than seven points. The Cowboys shot 60 percent in the victory and won despite being out-rebounded 18-10 in the first half and 32-28 overall.
Mason continues to move up the charts The Big 12 Player of the Week following his 23-point effort against UNLV, senior forward Desmond Mason has scored 20 or more points in four consecutive games and in nine of the past 13 contests dating to last season. His offensive production has been helped by a vastly improved outside shot: Mason was a 33-percent three-point shooter in his first three years but is hitting 44.2 percent beyond the arc this season, and one of his biggest weapons is his 15- to 18-foot jumper.
Mason is making his mark in several areas of the OSU records book. With 1,307 points in his career, Mason now ranks 12th in OSU career scoring. He also ranks eighth in OSU history in rebounds (646), 11th in steals (130), seventh in blocked shots (69), ninth in minutes played (3,042), ninth in games started (86), fourth in consecutive games started (81) and sixth in double-doubles (17).
Alexander's quick scoring triggers key second-half runs Senior guard Glendon Alexander has made a career out of his quick-release three-point shot, but this season applying the word "fast" to his game has another more important meaning. The Cowboys' sixth man has displayed an uncanny ability to score points in bunches, evidenced by his vital performances at UNLV and Washington. In both games, with OSU trailing, his rapid-fire scoring keyed game-turning runs for the Cowboys. Against the Runnin' Rebels, he scored 10 points in two minutes to lead a 14-0 run that gave OSU the lead for good; in Seattle, he hit for eight in one minute and 10 seconds as OSU scored 11 straight to defeat the Huskies. Alexander has hit 20 of 38 (52.6 percent) three-point attempts in the past six games.
Adkins' scoring touch returns Senior guard Joe Adkins has struggled to get his shooting untracked this season, but he has shown signs in the past three weeks of returning to form. Adkins hit all four of his three-point attempts against San Diego State three weeks ago, and after averaging 4.8 points in the four games prior to that contest, he has averaged 12.6 in the past five games. Currently ranked 28th in OSU history in scoring, Adkins needs 71 points to become OSU's 22nd 1,000-point scorer.
Jonzen's aggressive second half a key factor vs. Rebels Sophomore forward Fredrik Jonzen had one of the best games of his young OSU career in Las Vegas -- in the second half alone. Jonzen scored 10 points and had six rebounds in the period and was a key factor with Montonati and Alex Webber in foul trouble. He finished the game with 12 points and a career-high-tying nine rebounds. A 42.9-percent foul shooter a year ago, Jonzen hit a career-best six of eight attempts against UNLV and is now at 67.4 percent this season.
Williams steps up with other big men in foul trouble Freshman forward Andre Williams, already a crowd favorite in Stillwater with his spirited, athletic style of play, solidified that standing with his performance against Alcorn State. Williams set career highs in minutes (20) as well as points (11), rebounds (12), blocked shots (four) and dunks (three). Earlier this season, Williams became the first freshman in school history to record double-digit rebounds in an OSU season opener. The Kansas City native had 10 caroms in the Cowboys' lid-lifting victory over Appalachian State.
Williams has missed the past three games while OSU and NCAA officials sort out an eligibility issue relating to his involvement with an AAU team in the Kansas City area. OSU director of athletics Terry Don Phillips released the following statement late last week: "Andre Williams is being withheld from participation pending reinstatement of his eligibility. The eligibility issue concerns his involvement with an AAU team in the Kansas City area. We feel very confident, based upon the facts, that his eligibility will be restored quickly by the NCAA and that he will be able to return to competition." Williams' status remains uncertain heading into this week's games.
Gottlieb moves into all-time top 25 in assists Senior point guard Doug Gottlieb led the nation last season in assists and recorded the 13th-best single-season assist total in NCAA Division I history. Already this year, he is well ahead of his school-record assist average from last season. Gottlieb has 118 assists in the first 11 OSU games of the year; with 772 assists in his career, Gottlieb ranks 23rd in Division I history. His current career average of 7.64 per game ranks 13th on the NCAA D-I chart. Duke's Bobby Hurley holds the total career assists record with 1,076, and Avery Johnson of Southern set the D-I record for career average with 12.00 per game.
Other Cowboys can dish it, too In addition to Gottlieb's prowess as a passer, the entire OSU team has made a name for itself as a strong passing team in the past couple of seasons. The NCAA statisticians' manual states that as a rule of thumb, 50 to 60 percent of field goals should be accompanied by assists. But in 1998-99, OSU's assist/field-goal ratio was 67.9 percent, compared with 60.7 percent in 1997-98. This season is little different, as 69.4 percent of the Cowboys' field goals have been assisted. OSU dished out 31 assists, one shy of the school record, while hitting 37 field goals against San Diego State. OSU is third in the nation in assists per game (21.0).
New athletic trainer joins OSU staff Brian Luinstra, who had previously served on the staff at Wichita State, joined the OSU athletics department Dec. 13 as an athletic trainer working primarily with the men's basketball program. Luinstra, a University of Kansas graduate, did his graduate work at Wichita State as well. He was on the Shockers' bench for their Dec. 1 game at OSU.
Up next OSU opens the 2000 Big 12 Conference schedule Saturday when it hosts Texas Tech in a 12:45 p.m. tipoff televised by the ESPN Regional network, including channel 2 in Tulsa and channel 4 in Oklahoma City. The Cowboys then get a week off before traveling to Waco, Texas, to face the upstart Baylor Bears on Saturday, Jan. 15. The biggest game of the young conference slate takes place Wednesday, Jan. 19, when OSU hosts nationally ranked Texas.
Notable quotes "He's a man. How many guys do you have to defend in all three areas? He's got a strong, strong post game, he can hit the three, and he's got a great shot from medium range. What else can you say?" -- Washington coach Bob Bender on Desmond Mason, who scored 31 points and hit 11 of 17 field-goal attempts against the Huskies.
"In the back of my head, it was like, 'Score! Score! Score!' The first half, it was like I was there but I wasn't there. But in the second half, my teammates got me the ball and I was feeling it. I knew every shot I put up had a chance to go in." -- OSU senior guard Glendon Alexander after scoring 15 second-half points to lead OSU past UNLV.
Head Coach Eddie Sutton Eddie Sutton (Oklahoma State, 1958) is in his 10th year at his alma mater with a 212-89 record at the school as well as a 642-253 overall mark in his 30th year of collegiate coaching. Under his guidance, OSU has advanced to postseason play in eight of nine years and has won 20 games or more seven times. Sutton is the 20th coach in Division I history to reach the 600-victory mark, and he is just the seventh coach to reach it in 28 years or less, joining Denny Crum, Bob Knight, Adolph Rupp, Dean Smith, Jerry Tarkanian and John Wooden.
Only two active coaches (Knight and Tarkanian) rank ahead of Sutton in both victories and winning percentage, and only one other coach -- TCU's Billy Tubbs -- joins OSU's boss in having won coach-of-the-year awards in four different leagues. Sutton, who previously coached at Creighton, Arkansas and Kentucky, is the only coach in NCAA history to lead four different schools to the national tournament. With Sutton and Henry P. Iba among the 600-win club, OSU is one of only three schools -- joining Illinois and Kentucky -- with two coaches among the all-time top 20.
