April 09, 2003 | Cowboy Basketball
Saturday, Jan. 9, 2000 12:45 p.m. OSU Radio Network ESPN+ Stillwater, Okla. G allagher-Iba Arena (6,381)
Saturday's Game Oklahoma State opens its Big 12 season Saturday when the Cowboys host conference foe Texas Tech, coached by former Eddie Sutton assistant James Dickey. The Cowboys will be looking to start Big 12 play with a victory for the third straight year.
OSU-Texas Tech: The Series Sweeps have been the rule in this series since the inception of Big 12 play in the 1996-97 season. The Red Raiders won both games that year, but OSU, which leads the all-time series 13-6, has won all four since, including a 93-67 triumph in last year's regular-season finale.
OSU Coach Eddie Sutton Eddie Sutton (Oklahoma State, 1958) is in his 10th year at OSU and his 30th year of collegiate coaching. Under his guidance, OSU has advanced to the NCAA Tournament seven times. Sutton currently owns a career record of 643-253 (71.7 percent) overall and is 213-89 (70.4 percent) at OSU. Sutton is just the seventh coach to reach 600 coaching victories in 28 or fewer seasons.
Scouting the Red Raiders Led by a strong triumvirate of scorers - center Andy Ellis (18.7), guard Rayford Young (17.9) and forward Mario Layne (15.6) - the Red Raiders have had a solid start to the season, losing only to Indiana (in the first game in Tech's new United Spirit Arena) and at New Mexico State. Tech is ranked 14th in the nation and first in the Big 12 in free-throw percentage (74.9).

In the polls OSU reached a season-high No. 11 position in both major national polls before last week's loss to LSU. The Cowboys have not been higher during the regular season since the 1993-94 team climbed as high as No. 8 in early December. OSU has been ranked in nine consecutive AP polls, the Cowboys were ranked 11 straight weeks last season, a streak that was the longest since the 1990-91 and 1991-92 teams were ranked for 24 consecutive polls, including all 18 in 1991-92, just the fifth time in its history and the first since 1957-58 that an OSU team had gone wire-to-wire in the polls.

Cowboys cruise in final nonleague tuneup OSU came within two points of its scoring record Wednesday when the Cowboys rolled to a 125-65 victory over nearby Langston, likely marking the only time in school history that OSU's victory margin was larger than the mileage separating the teams involved. Langston, which sits just 24 miles southwest of the OSU campus, got 26 points from guard Lee James but was unable to overcome the Cowboys' 62-percent field-goal shooting.
Cowboys set plenty of milestones in victory Wednesday's game against Langston will leave its mark on the OSU records book. The Cowboys set a school record for assists (36) - the team's first 15 baskets were assisted - and recorded the second-highest point total in school history (any of three missed three-pointers in the final minute would have notched a new mark) while also tallying the fourth-widest victory margin. Oklahoma State committed just seven turnovers, the last times a Cowboy squad had fewer were the Sweet Sixteen and Final Eight games in 1995, when OSU turned it over just six times against both Alabama and Wake Forest.
Career nights all around for Pokes Several Cowboys had career-topping performances in the team's victory over Langston. Brian Montonati led the team in scoring with a career-high 28 points and recorded his fifth double-double this year, Desmond Mason pulled down a personal-best 15 rebounds to go along with his 22 points, giving him 18 career double-doubles, fourth in school history, Glendon Alexander recorded career highs in points (25) and three-pointers made (seven) despite playing just 23 minutes, and Doug Gottlieb recorded a career-best 18 points and his third career points-assists double-double. The victory marked the first time since a Jan. 8, 1994, triumph over Oklahoma that OSU had three players score 20 points in a regulation game.
Scoring drought, LSU end OSU streak OSU scored just two field goals and five points during the last 12 minutes of the first half and never fully recovered as the team's 10-game winning streak ended at the hands of LSU on Dec. 30. The Cowboys fell behind by as much as 12 points but battled back against the unbeaten Tigers and a hostile New Orleans crowd to cut the lead to one. But LSU responded, extending the lead and then holding the Cowboys scoreless on back-to-back possessions when the Pokes had cut the lead back to two.
Montonati continues consistent offensive output Senior forward Brian Montonati made a name for himself as a super sub last season, scoring in double figures 11 times off the bench and doing so five times in games when he played less than 20 minutes. Although he's stepped into a starting role - and parlayed it into five double-doubles and 10-points-plus scoring in every game - he continues to show a knack for scoring points in small amounts of playing time. The team's starting big forward is fourth on the team in minutes but second in scoring (14.2) and first in rebounding (8.2).
Mason continues to move up the charts The Big 12 Player of the Week following his 23-point effort against UNLV on Dec. 18, senior forward Desmond Mason has scored 20 or more points in four consecutive games and in nine of the past 13 contests dating to last season. His offensive production has been helped by a vastly improved outside shot: Mason was a 33-percent three-point shooter in his first three years but is hitting 44.2 percent beyond the arc this season, and one of his biggest weapons is his 15- to 18-foot jumper.
Mason is making his mark in several areas of the OSU records book. With 1,329 points in his career, Mason now ranks 11th in OSU career scoring. He also ranks eighth in OSU history in rebounds (661), 11th in steals (131), seventh in blocked shots (70), ninth in minutes played (3,068), ninth in games started (87), fourth in consecutive games started (82) and fourth in double-doubles (18).
Alexander's quick scoring triggers key second-half runs The Cowboys' sixth man, senior guard Glendon Alexander, has displayed an uncanny ability to score points in bunches, evidenced by his vital performances at UNLV and Washington. In both games, with OSU trailing, his rapid-fire scoring keyed game-turning runs for the Cowboys. Against the Runnin' Rebels, he scored 10 points in two minutes to lead a 14-0 run that gave OSU the lead for good, in Seattle, he hit for eight in one minute and 10 seconds as OSU scored 11 straight to defeat the Huskies. After scoring a career-high 25 points in just 23 minutes against Langston, Alexander has hit 27 of 51 (52.9 percent) three-point attempts in the past seven games. He hit a career-best seven three-pointers against Langston, the most by an OSU player since Randy Rutherford hit a school-record 11 against Kansas in 1995.
Jönzén's aggressive second half a key factor vs. Rebels Sophomore forward Fredrik Jönzén had one of the best games of his young OSU career in Las Vegas - in the second half alone. Jönzén scored 10 points and had six rebounds in the period and was a key factor with Montonati and Alex Webber in foul trouble. He finished the game with 12 points and a career-high-tying nine rebounds. A 42.9-percent foul shooter a year ago, Jönzén hit a career-best six of eight attempts against UNLV and is now at 69.2 percent this season, including a career-high seven charities against Langston.
Gottlieb moves into all-time top 25 in assists Senior point guard Doug Gottlieb led the nation last season in assists and recorded the 13th-best single-season assist total in NCAA Division I history. Already this year, he is well ahead of his school-record assist average from last season. Gottlieb has 129 assists in the first 12 OSU games of the year, with 783 assists in his career, Gottlieb ranks 20th in Division I history. His current career average of 7.64 per game ranks 13th on the NCAA D-I chart. Duke's Bobby Hurley holds the total career assists record with 1,076, and Avery Johnson of Southern set the D-I record for career average with 12.00 per game. Gottlieb hit eight of 10 field-goal attempts against Langston, scoring a career-high 18 points and recording his third career points-assists double-double.
Other Cowboys can dish it, too In addition to Gottlieb's prowess as a passer, as well as Joe Adkins' - the Cowboys' starting backcourt leads the country in assists with 15.5 combined per game - the entire OSU team has made a name for itself as a strong passing team in the past couple of seasons. The NCAA statisticians' manual states that as a rule of thumb, 50 to 60 percent of field goals should be accompanied by assists. But in 1998-99, OSU's assist/field-goal ratio was 67.9 percent, compared with 60.7 percent in 1997-98. This season is little different, as 69.9 percent of the Cowboys' field goals have been assisted. After dishing out a school-record 36 helpers against Langston (including assists on the first 15 baskets), OSU leads the nation with 22.3 assists per game.
Adkins' scoring touch returns Senior guard Joe Adkins has struggled to get his shooting untracked this season, but he has shown signs in the past three weeks of returning to form. Adkins hit all four of his three-point attempts against San Diego State three weeks ago, and after averaging 4.8 points in the four games prior to that contest, he has averaged 10.7 in the past six games. Currently ranked 28th in OSU history in scoring, Adkins needs 70 points to become OSU's 22nd 1,000-point scorer.
Williams steps up with other big men in foul trouble Freshman forward Andre Williams, already a crowd favorite in Stillwater with his spirited, athletic style of play, solidified that standing with his performance against Alcorn State. Williams set career highs in minutes (20) as well as points (11), rebounds (12), blocked shots (four) and dunks (three). Earlier this season, Williams became the first freshman in school history to record double-digit rebounds in an OSU season opener. The Kansas City native had 10 caroms in the Cowboys' lid-lifting victory over Appalachian State.
Williams has missed the past four games while OSU and NCAA officials sort out an eligibility issue relating to his involvement with an AAU team in the Kansas City area. OSU director of athletics Terry Don Phillips released the following statement Thursday: "After meeting with NCAA officials earlier this week in Indianapolis, we have a better understanding of the NCAA's present position. However, given the particular facts relating to Andre's case, we are not in agreement with their current interpretation as it applies to the rules of amateurism, but we do appreciate the willingness of the NCAA to continue dialogue on the matter. I do want to emphasize that neither Andre Williams or anyone else has knowingly violated rules as they apply to this situation."
Charting the Cowboys against the Red Raiders Senior center Alex Webber scored a career-high 22 points in last year's 93-67 victory over Texas Tech on Feb. 27 last year, Desmond Mason averaged 21.5 points in the two games against Tech in 1998-99, and Doug Gottlieb has averaged 10.5 assists in his four career games vs. TTU. Here's a look at current Cowboys' career statistics against Texas Tech:

Up next The Cowboys get a week off before traveling to Waco, Texas, to face the upstart Baylor Bears on Saturday, Jan. 15. The biggest game of the young conference slate takes place Wednesday, Jan. 19, when OSU hosts nationally ranked Texas in an 8 p.m. game.
Notable quotes "The season really starts on Saturday. This [OSU's victory over Langston] is fun because it's good that somebody like me gets to have 18 points and Brian has 21 at the half. If things like that happen in Big 12 play, it will be great, but the likelihood isn't really there. You get your confidence up, but this isn't the type of competition that we're going to play, and we know that." - Doug Gottlieb following OSU's 125-65 victory over Langston.
"He's a man. How many guys do you have to defend in all three areas? He's got a strong, strong post game, he can hit the three, and he's got a great shot from medium range. What else can you say?" - Washington coach Bob Bender on Desmond Mason, who scored 31 points and hit 11 of 17 field-goal attempts against the Huskies.
Head Coach Eddie Sutton Eddie Sutton (Oklahoma State, 1958) is in his 10th year at his alma mater with a 213-89 record at the school as well as a 643-253 overall mark in his 30th year of collegiate coaching. Under his guidance, OSU has advanced to postseason play in eight of nine years and has won 20 games or more seven times. Sutton is the 20th coach in Division I history to reach the 600-victory mark, and he is just the seventh coach to reach it in 28 years or less, joining Denny Crum, Bob Knight, Adolph Rupp, Dean Smith, Jerry Tarkanian and John Wooden.
Only two active coaches (Knight and Tarkanian) rank ahead of Sutton in both victories and winning percentage, and only one other coach - TCU's Billy Tubbs - joins OSU's boss in having won coach-of-the-year awards in four different leagues. Sutton, who previously coached at Creighton, Arkansas and Kentucky, is the only coach in NCAA history to lead four different schools to the national tournament. With Sutton and Henry P. Iba among the 600-win club, OSU is one of only three schools - joining Illinois and Kentucky - with two coaches among the all-time top 20.
