Saturday's Game Oklahoma State travels to Ames, Iowa, this weekend to face the Iowa State Cyclones in a 4 p.m. game on Saturday. OSU is 14-1 overall and 1-1 in Big 12 Conference action after a 68-57 win over Baylor on Tuesday night in Waco. Last Time Out For Oklahoma State Oklahoma State had four players score in double figures and the Cowboys limited trigger-happy Baylor to just 5-of-21 from beyond the three-point arc as OSU defeated the Bears, 68-57, in the Ferrell Center. Melvin Sanders led all scorers with 15 points, followed by Victor Williams with 13, Maurice Baker with 12 and Fredrik Jönzén with 11. Ivan McFarlin led all players with 10 rebounds, his fourth-straight double-figure rebounding game. Baker played 37 minutes after being limited to just 11 vs. Texas due to a strained groin and abdomen muscle. Oklahoma State outscored Baylor, 43-28, in the second period after trailing by four, 29-25, at halftime. BU shot 52.2 percent in the first period, but just 33.3 percent in the second stanza. OSU shot nearly 58 percent from the floor in the second half, and outrebounded the Bears, 41-27.
OSU-Iowa State on Television Saturday's game in Ames will be televised nationally on ESPN. Ron Franklin will handle the play-by-play duties while Jon Sundvold will provide color analysis. Jay Kutlow is the producer for the game.
Last Time Out For Iowa State ISU got 28 points from Tyray Pearson and 20 more from Jake Sullivan as the Cyclones defeated Missouri, 71-67, Wednesday night in Ames. Kareem Rush scored 29 for the Tigers on 12-of-20 shooting, but the rest of his teammates shot just 34.2 percent from the floor. Iowa State shot 51.8 percent, and had just seven turnovers in the game while forcing MU into 13. The Cyclones played just seven players as Pearson, Sullivan and Shane Power all played the entire game. ISU shot 63 percent in the second half, outscoring Mizzou, 45-38, in that period.
OSU-Iowa State: The Series After 100 games between Oklahoma State and Iowa State, the series is deadlocked at 50-50. In Ames, the Cyclones have dominated with a 31-11 record vs. the Cowboys. OSU has won 12 of the last 15 meetings, including an 88-80 victory in overtime last season. ISU won the last meeting in Ames, 72-61, on Feb. 26, 2000.
Up Next: Kansas and Texas Tech Oklahoma State returns home for a regionally-televised contest with top-ranked Kansas (13-1 overall, 2-0 Big 12) on Tuesday, Jan. 15, at 8 p.m. in Gallagher-Iba Arena. On Saturday, Jan. 19, the Cowboys will travel to Lubbock, Texas, to face the Texas Tech Red Raiders (13-1, 2-0) and Coach Bob Knight in a 1 p.m., nationally-televised game on CBS.
Last Time vs. Iowa State OSU took control in overtime after a seesaw second half to win on the night of the official dedication of Gallagher-Iba Arena. Trailing 40-39 just under three minutes into the second half, the Cowboys marched out to a 52-43 lead after a run sparked by Victor Williams' two baskets and one assist. But the Cyclones came back to take a 55-54 lead at the 10-minute mark, only to see OSU take charge again to lead 66-57 with three minutes to play. Again, though, ISU came back, and when Tinsley's three-pointer bounced high off the rim and then dropped through the ring with 0.3 seconds left, the game went to overtime. OSU scored the first six points in the extra session, though, and although OSU hit just 9-of-18 charity tosses in overtime, the Cowboys hung on for their 11th-consecutive home victory over the Cyclones, knotting the all-time series after 100 meetings. Baker and Jönzén tied career scoring highs, and Baker recorded his second double-double in three games. Victor Williams tied a season high with 20 points. The Cowboys tied a season low with 14 turnovers. Andre Williams tied a career high with four blocked shots. For only the second time in 292 games, OSU failed to hit a three-point shot. OSU recorded a season high in free-throw attempts for the third-straight game and hit a season-high 28 charities.
Last Time in Ames Marcus Fizer scored 29 points and Michael Nurse hit five three pointers as No. 17 Iowa State defeated No. 10 Oklahoma State, 72-61. OSU was leading the conference in scoring defense at 61 points a game, but Iowa State topped that figure with 8:47 to play and the Cowboys couldn't handle the combination of Fizer, Nurse and the inside play of Stevie Johnson, who had 12 points and seven rebounds. Iowa State also played outstanding defense on Desmond Mason, the Cowboys' leading scorer. Mason, guarded by Kantrail Horton, scored just eight points on 2-of-11 shooting. He had been averaging 18.6 and was coming off a 25-point game at Missouri. Joe Adkins led Oklahoma State with 14 points and Glendon Alexander scored 13. Leading 37-31 at halftime, Iowa State began the second half with a 12-2 run that included two treys by Nurse and was in control from then on. Tinsley's 3-pointer and Horton's two free throws gave Iowa State a 58-37 lead with 12:25 to play, and the Cyclones ran an effective four-corners offense down the stretch. Iowa State led 72-53 with a little more than a minute remaining before Oklahoma State scored the final eight points.
Cowboy Noteworthy * Oklahoma State ranks in the top seven in all three major ratings percentage indices. The Cowboys are third behind Cincinnati and Duke in the Sagarin ratings, and seventh in both collegerpi.com and the College Basketball News RPI ratings, behind Kansas, Arizona, Duke, Cincinnati, Georgia and Wake Forest.
* Oklahoma State's 13-0 start to the season was the third-best in school history. The 1991-92 Cowboys started the year off 20-0, while the Aggies of 1950-51 began the year with 16 wins before a loss.
* Oklahoma State is one of eight schools to have already won 14 games this season. Pittsburgh leads the pack at 15-1, while Oklahoma State, Cincinnati and Butler are 14-1, and Syracuse, Mississippi State Miami (Fla.) and Alabama are 14-2.
Cowboys In The Polls Oklahoma State is currently ranked sixth in both the Associated Press poll and the ESPN/USA Today Coaches Poll. The Cowboys dropped a spot after falling to Texas last week. OSU's No. 5 ranking over the last two weeks is the highest ranking OSU has achieved since the Cowboys were ranked second nationally in mid-February of 1992. OSU was ranked No. 2 for two weeks before dropping back to eighth that year. Four of Oklahoma State's opponents this season are ranked in the top 25 of both polls (Kansas, Oklahoma, Cincinnati and Missouri), while five more are receiving votes in at least one of the polls.
