Cowboys Meet Sooners in Key Big XII Test
April 09, 2003 | Cowboy Basketball
No. 22 Oklahoma State (11-3, 3-0 Big 12), who won its fifth straight game on Saturday, continues its Big 12 schedule when it hosts the talented Oklahoma Sooners on Tuesday.
Cowboys' forward Desmond Mason, who played despite a sprained thumb, had a career-high 32 points and 10 rebounds to lead Oklahoma State to a 76-63 victory over Baylor on Saturday night.
"He's remarkable," Oklahoma State coach Eddie Sutton said of Mason. "When you look at his right hand - he has a severely sprained thumb which affects his passing, rebounding and shooting - and yet he was still able to do it. This is one of the best individual performances we've had since I came to Oklahoma State."
The Big 12's leading scorer, Adrian Peterson, who came in averaging 19.6 points per game, was held to a season-low 10 points on 3-of-11 shooting against Baylor.
The win ended a two-game road trip for the Cowboys, who will play five of their next seven at home where they have only lost once all season.
The underrated Sooners (12-3, 3-0) beat Big 12 foe Colorado for the 11th straight time, 89-75 on Saturday.
Senior Eric Martin set a career-high with six 3-pointers and 23 points on Saturday.
Guard Tim Heskett, who is leading the Big 12 in 3-point percentage and 3-pointers-made, and forwards Eduardo Najera and Ryan Humphrey, who average 29.5 points per game, combine to give Oklahoma one of the country's best inside-ouside games in the country.
