Cowgirl Basketball Adds Two During Spring Signing Period
April 30, 2003 | Cowgirl Basketball
A pair of Wabash Valley (Ill.) College products, 5-8 shooting guard Shyra Samuels and 5-7 point guard Nina Stone, both cast their lot with OSU and will join the squad for the 2003-04 season with two years of eligibility remaining.
Last season, the duo led the Lady Warriors to a 34-3 record, the Region XXIV title and a fifth-place finish at the National Tournament. At the regional tournament, Stone was named to the all-tournament team, while Samuels was named as the events most valuable player.
Rated as the No. 16 shooting guard in the country by the ASGR, Samuels averaged 12.0 points and team highs in rebounds (5.0) and steals (2.2) per game. The Indianapolis, Ind., native also hit 49 percent from the floor, blocked 23 shots and dished out 99 assists as a sophomore.
Shyra Samuels is a very talented wing player with a lot of minutes at the collegiate level, Goodenough said. She will provide points from the perimeter and is able to defend Big 12-caliber wing players.
Stone was one of 10 players named to the Kodak All-America Team after leading WVC in scoring (18.2 ppg) and assists (160) this season. The Indianapolis, Ind., native was also tabbed as the No. 3 junior college point guard and 15th-best overall player by the All-Star Girls Report.
We are thrilled to sign a point guard like Nina Stone who has received so much recognition, Goodenough said. She has great shooting touch and is such a good passer because she sees the floor so well.
The tandem joins Cloud County (Kan.) Community Colleges Lynsie Tischhauser in the Cowgirls 2003 spring recruiting class.
