OSU Statement on Saturday Incident
April 19, 2003 | Cowboy Basketball
"First and foremost, it is our understanding that the woman that was involved in the initial, inadvertent contact is okay and so is her unborn child. Our primary concern at the time was her welfare" Phillips said. "This was a very unique situation and, while we still don't have all the facts, we are reviewing the entire incident with the appropriate personnel."
Phillips said steps are always taken to insure the safety of all fans in Gallagher-Iba Arena as well as the safety of coaches and players. "I am satisfied we have the proper procedures in place. We will, however, review and make changes if necessary."
Phillips also said he commended several OSU students in the vicinity of the incident as well as Texas coach Rick Barnes. "Upon review of the video, I was pleased to see a number of our students respond to try and secure the area. I also applaud and appreciate Coach Barnes' prompt response to the incident."
"I have written to the University of Texas' Athletic Director to express our apologies for the incident and also to give assurance that we will review all circumstances and react in a fashion that insures a similar situation does not recur."
