April 15, 2003 | Cowgirl Basketball
Oklahoma State's women's basketball team (5-16 overall, 1-9 Big 12) will take on its third consecutive ranked foe on Saturday night when it travels to Manhattan, Kan., to battle fifth-ranked Kansas State (22-2, 9-1) at 7 p.m. OSU enters the contest having lost seven consecutive games, while the Wildcats are riding a four-game winning streak.
ABOUT THE WILDCATS
Kansas State sits atop the Big 12 standings at 9-1 after defeating Nebraska, 64-47, on Wednesday night in Manhattan. Offensively, a trio of players; Kendra Wecker, Nicole Ohlde and Megan Mahoney lead the way for the Wildcats. The trio has started all 24 of the squad's games this season and is responsible for nearly 52 (51.7) of the squad's 76 points per outing. KSU's only losses of the season have come on the road against nationally-ranked Stanford and at Iowa State, while they are sporting a 15-0 record at home. Against OSU, the Wildcats trail 25-21 in the overall series and have lost three consecutive contests after the Cowgirls stunned then-No. 9 K-State, 68-60, last year. The Wildcats' last win in the series came in 2000, a 71-64 triumph inside Gallagher-Iba Arena and their last home win in the series came in 1997 (58-50). Saturday's contest will be broadcast on on the Wildcat Network with a sellout crowd at Bramlage Coliseum expected. K-State owns a 10-7 advantage all-time against the Cowgirls at home.
LAST TIME OUT
OSU nearly pulled off its second win over a nationally-ranked team this season on Wednesday night, falling, 72-70, to No. 11 Texas. After leading for most of the game and building their lead to as many as 12 in the second half, the Cowgirls were unable to overcome a hot-shooting Jamie Carey down the stretch. The Longhorn guard buried a pair of crucial treys in the final three minutes to thwart the upset bid. OSU's Trisha Skibbe led all scorers with 23 points to go along with nine boards, while Chantoya Hawkins poured in a season-best 20 points while dishing out five assists.
