Cowgirl Basketball Set to Compete in ASU Holiday Classic

ABOUT THE TOURNAMENT FIELD Of the three opponents in this year's field, OSU has crossed paths with only one (Portland State). The Cowgirls and Vikings met on Jan. 4, 1980, in Chico, Calif., at the Cal State-Chico Tournament where OSU prevailed 89-79. Arizona State enters the tournament sporting a 2-0 record after defeating Chicago State, 82-63, and Northern Illinois, 70-62. Four Sun Devils are averaging double figures in the scoring column with freshman Kristen Kovesdy leading the way at 16.5 points per outing. Portland State will arrive in Tempe with a 2-0 mark as well, owning wins over Cal State-Northridge and Cal Poly. The Vikings are led by senior Nikki Pettigrew, who enters the event averaging a team-best 23.5 points per game and is hitting at a 50-percent clip (9-of-18) beyond the three-point arc. OSU's first-round opponent, Wisconsin-Milwaukee, will be in search of its first win of the season after opening with losses to Purdue (82-59) and at Marquette (73-53). Junior Maria Viall enters play as the squad's leading scorer (21.5 ppg), leading rebounder (7.5) and is tops on the team in blocked shots, averaging three per game.
