Cowgirl Basketball Opens Home Schedule Against Wichita State

ABOUT THE SHOCKERS For the second consecutive season, OSU will serve as the season-opening opponent for Wichita State. Last season, the Shockers held on for a 71-66 win against the Cowgirls in Wichita. In the victory, four WSU players reached double figures in the scoring column. Junior center Angela Buckner averaged a double-double (11.7 pts., 11.3 rbs.) per game last season after finishing her freshman season as the nation's second-leading rebounder (12.6 rpg). OSU holds an 8-6 advantage in the overall series and has taken four of the last six meetings between the two squads. In Stillwater, OSU has won all five meetings, including an 86-74 victory in 1995, the last meeting in Gallagher-Iba Arena. This season, the Shockers won both of their exhibitions, defeating Sports Tours, 83-67, and Solna, Sweden, 85-56.
LAST TIME AGAINST THE SHOCKERS WICHITA, Kan. - Oklahoma State's women's basketball team opened the road portion of its schedule with a 71-66 setback on Tuesday night before 1,365 fans at Levitt Arena. The Cowgirls (2-1) took an early lead on a Kara Faulk three-pointer at the 12:58 mark of the first half to put OSU in front 10-9. Two minutes later, Trisha Skibbe extended the lead to five, finishing a fast break with a layup. The Shockers (1-0) went on a 15-0 run to take a 24-14 lead. The WSU defense held the Cowgirls scoreless for more than eight and a half minutes before a pair of Thia Willis free throws at the 2:14 mark halted the drought. Tari Cummings cut the deficit to seven points before a pair of Shocker free throws with two seconds remaining in the half gave them a 29-20 advantage at the half. WSU built a 15-point advantage in the second half when Jennifer Kaczka converted a free throw to complete a three-point play. OSU chipped away at the lead with a jumper by Trisha Skibbe cutting the deficit to eight and back-to-back buckets by Cummings cut the deficit to 64-62 with 1:53 remaining. Four consecutive free throws built the lead back to six for the Shockers before a three-pointer and a free throw by Terrisha Osborn got the Cowgirls back within two at 68-66 with 42 seconds remaining. Three consecutive free throws by WSU provided the final margin.
LAST TIME OUT Oklahoma State headed to Tulsa for the Bertha Teague Classic last weekend to battle a pair of in-state rivals, Oral Roberts and Tulsa. For the first time in the nine-year history of the tournament, the Cowgirls finished winless, suffering a 67-47 loss to ORU on Friday night and a 75-55 setback to Tulsa on Saturday night at the Donald W. Reynolds Center.
