Stillwater, Okla. - Tony Allen, a junior on the Cowboy basketball team, was named the Big 12 Conference's Newcomer of the Year, it was announced today, by the Associated Press.
The junior-college transfer aided Oklahoma State to its fourth-place finish in the league. Prior to the season, OSU was predicted to finish sixth by both the league coaches and the press.
In his first season with the Cowboys, Allen was second on the squad with a 14.7 points per game average, and also had 5.5 rebounds per contest. He had 78 assists, 56 steals and 24 blocked shots on the season.
He was twice named the Big 12 Conference's Rookie of the Week, and was also named ESPN.com's Player of the Week. Last month, he was listed second-team All-District 12 by the National Association of Basketball Coaches.
