Cowboys face Cougars
Oklahoma State travels to Salt Lake City, Utah, this weekend to face the BYU Cougars. The game on Saturday, Dec. 6, is set for 5 p.m. CST (4 p.m. MT). OSU is 4-0 and coming off a 30-point win over Texas-San Antonio, 83-53, while BYU is 3-1 and fresh off a 75-69 win over Boise State in Boise, Idaho. The game will be played at the Delta Center, home of the NBAs Utah Jazz. It will be televised back to Oklahoma by Cowboy Sports Properties.
Last Time Out
Tony Allen scored a game-high 19 points, and the Cowboys shot nearly 61 percent as OSU defeated Texas-San Antonio, 83-53, Wednesday night in Gallagher-Iba Arena. Oklahoma State also connected on 6-of-13 shots from beyond the arc. The Cowboys had four players score in double figures as John Lucas, Joey Graham and freshman David Monds each scored 11 points. Lucas also dished out seven assists and had just two turnovers. Jason Miller had a solid performance with eight points and seven rebounds, while Monds had seven boards as well, tying for team honors. OSU limited the Roadrunners to just 34 percent shooting, and forced 20 turnovers. Oklahoma State outscored Texas-San Antonio, 46-6, in the paint.

BYU is 3-1 this season after defeating Boise State, 75-69, Tuesday night in Idaho. The Cougars are led by senior center Rafael Araujo, who is currently averaging 19 points and 9.5 rebounds per game. Hes also shooting 625. percent from the floor and nearly 76 percent from the line. Junior guard Mike Hall is chipping in 14.8 points per contest. As a team, BYU is shooting 48.3 percent from the floor and outscoring its opponents by an average of 14.5 points per contest. The Cougars are a good free-throw shooting team, connecting on nearly 78 percent of their shots from the charity stripe. Their only loss was by one point to California on the road, 47-46. BYU has previously beaten Southern Utah and Utah Valley State by an average of more than 26 points.
Series History
The overall series between Oklahoma State and BYU is tied at three games each. OSU won the first two games in the series back in the 1960s, and the Cougars won the next two in back-to-back seasons in the early 70s. BYU also won a game in 1994 in the Great Alaska Shootout in Anchorage. The Cowboys won the last meeting between these two schools, a 78-65 victory last year in the All-College Classic in Oklahoma City.
OSU-BYU Connections
There is an obvious connection between the OSU and BYU basketball programs. Daniel Bobik, a junior guard at Oklahoma State, transferred to OSU prior to last season from BYU. He spent the 2000-01 and 2001-02 seasons with the Cougars. Another connection is BYU senior guard Luiz Lemes who spent two seasons at Eastern Oklahoma State College in Wilburton, Okla.
OSU vs. Non-Conference Opponents
Oklahoma States Cowboys have enjoyed considerable success at home vs. non-conference opponents. However, OSU has also been successful overall vs. non-league foes. Since the 1997-98 season, Oklahoma State has a 67-9 (88.2 percent) record in regular-season non-Big 12 contests. That includes a 10-0 record in 1997-98, a 9-3 mark in 1998-99, an 11-1 record in 1999-2000, a 9-2 mark in 2000-01, a 13-1 record in 2001-02 and an 11-2 finish last year. The Cowboys are 4-0 in non-league games so far this season.
Sutton Nearing Top 10
With the Cowboys win over Texas-San Antonio Wednesday night, OSU coach Eddie Sutton moved into a tie for 11th place on the all-time career wins list in NCAA history. His 728 wins ties him with Norm Stewart, longtime Missouri coach. His next victory will tie him with Jerry Tarkanian for 10th place on the list. With two more victories, Coach Sutton will sit in sole possession of 10th place on the NCAAs all-time coaching victories list.
