Cowgirl Basketball Upsets No. 24 Michigan State, 62-60
December 03, 2003 | Cowgirl Basketball
STILLWATER, Okla. Â Oklahoma State's women's basketball team rallied late and held on to upset
24th-ranked Michigan State, 62-60, on Tuesday night in front of 3,672 fans inside Gallagher-Iba Arena.
For the Cowgirls (2-3), the win was their first against a ranked opponent since knocking off then-No. 9 Arkansas in Stillwater last season. The victory also avenged last season's 52-point loss to the Spartans (4-1) in East Lansing.
“This is my biggest win at Oklahoma State. I told the girls after the game that the team that started out 0-2 no longer exists,” Cowgirl head coach Julie Goodenough said. “This is how we have to play. We defeated a very good Michigan State team and to have a 54-point turn around from last year's game says a lot about how much effort the girls put into preparing
for this game.“
OSU gained its largest lead of the night at 29-14 behind junior Nina Stone's third consecutive three-pointer with 8:40 remaining in the first half. The Indianapolis, Ind., native finished the contest with 18 points, including a 4-of-6 effort from beyond the three-point arc.
The Spartans erased an eight-point halftime deficit with a 13-3 run to tie the game at 52 apiece with 4:51 left. Thirty seconds later, MSU took their first lead since scoring the first basket of the game with a jumper by Kristin Haynie that gave the Spartans a 54-52 advantage.
The Cowgirls trailed by two with 63 ticks left on the clock before Stone drilled her fourth trey of the game to put OSU back in front. She then hit a pair of free throws with 26 seconds left to give the Cowgirls the lead for good at 61-60.
After a Kenzie Cole free throw, Michigan State had one final chance, but both of Liz Shimek's jumpers in the final seconds came up short.
OSU will return to action this Friday when it hosts Sam Houston State in the first round of the Cowgirl Classic on Friday at 7 p.m.
