Series History
Oklahoma State won the only previous meeting between these two schools, a 33-16 victory over the Savages on Dec. 28, 1939. It was then Oklahoma A&Ms second of four victories at the All-College Tournament (the Oklahoma Invitational in those days) in Oklahoma City that year. OAMC finished with a 26-3 record that season, including a 12-0 mark in Missouri Valley Conference play. The Aggies lost their first game of the season, 34-30, at Kansas before rattling off 25 consecutive victories, a school record. The Pokes lost to Duquesne in the semifinals of the NIT at Madison Square Gardens in New York City, then defeated DePaul, 23-22, in the third-place game. Two days later, Oklahoma A&M lost an overtime game to Kansas, 45-43, in an NCAA District meeting to end the season.
OSU-Southeastern Connections
Wren Baker, the administrative assistant for Oklahoma State Cowboy Basketball, graduated from Southeastern Oklahoma State in 2001 after spending time as a student assistant coach with the Savages for two seasons. He earned his degree in health, physical education and leisure from Southeastern in May of 2001.
Non-Conference Record in Gallagher-Iba Arena
Oklahoma State will coninue the non-conference home portion of its schedule when the Cowboys host Southeastern Oklahoma State on Tuesday night inside Gallagher-Iba Arena. The Pokes are riding a current 31-game home non-conference winning streak that dates back to 1998. OSU has won 110 of its last 111 non-conference games held in Gallagher-Iba Arena since Jan. 7, 1987. The only loss during that span was an 83-81 loss to Florida Atlantic on Dec. 1, 1998, when the Cowboys were ranked 11th in the nation. That loss broke a string of 79-consecutive home non-league wins for OSU. Dating back to 1981, Oklahoma State is 139-7 (.952) in those types of games. The Cowboys have not allowed more than 66 points in 26 of their last 27 home non-conference contests.
OSU vs. Non-Conference Opponents
Oklahoma States Cowboys have enjoyed considerable success at home vs. non-conference opponents. However, OSU has also been successful overall vs. non-league foes. Since the 1997-98 season, Oklahoma State has a 67-10 (87 percent) record in regular-season non-Big 12 contests. That includes a 10-0 record in 1997-98, a 9-3 mark in 1998-99, an 11-1 record in 1999-2000, a 9-2 mark in 2000-01, a 13-1 record in 2001-02 and an 11-2 finish last year. The Cowboys are 4-1 in non-league games so far this season.
Sutton Nearing Top 10
With the Cowboys win over Texas-San Antonio on Dec. 3, OSU coach Eddie Sutton moved into a tie for 11th place on the all-time career wins list in NCAA history. His 728 wins ties him with Norm Stewart, longtime Missouri coach. His next victory will tie him with Jerry Tarkanian for 10th place on the list. With two more victories, Coach Sutton will sit in sole possession of 10th place on the NCAAs all-time coaching victories list.
McFarlin Achieves 500 Rebounds
With eight rebounds against Northwestern State, Cowboy senior Ivan McFarlin became the 19th player in school history to grab at least 500 rebounds in his career. McFarlin, who will in all likelihood regain a year of eligibility when he graduates in May, currently has 526 rebounds in his career. Ivan currently sits in 16th place on the school career rebounding list, and needs 36 to move into 15th place. A season resembling his first two would put him in the top 10 by seasons end.
I-Mac moving up other Career Lists
McFarlin also broke the career 700 point plateau with 15 against the Northwestern State Demons. He began the season with 688 points, and now has 738 in his career. With three blocked shots vs. Northwestern State, Ivan also moved into the top 10 on the career deflections list. He deflected a career-best four shots against Colorado State, and now has 71 career blocked shots and sole possession of 10th place on that list. He needs one more block to move into a tie for ninth place with Andrew Jones, who had 72 blocks from 1977-78.
Allen Returns
Senior Tony Allen is averaging 15.8 points (leading the team), 2.8 rebounds and 2.6 assists per game while shooting 52.5 percent from the floor. He has scored in double figures in all five games this season, and now has 30 in his career. The 6-4 guard from Chicago was the Big 12 Newcomer of the Year last season, and received mention for the preseason All-Big 12 squads this year.
Lucas Dishing the Rock
Junior John Lucas has dished out 22 assists in his first five games as a Cowboy, an average of 4.4 per game. He also has just 10 turnovers, an assist-to-turnover ratio of 2.2-to-1. John is averaging 2.2 steals per contest, and is a perfect 11-of-11 from the line so far this season.
Bobik coming up big time
Junior transfer Daniel Bobik recorded career highs in both points and assists in the Cowboys game vs. BYU, scoring a team-high 18 points and dishing out a game-high eight assists. Bobik is averaging 9.8 points per game this season for OSU, shooting nearly 55 percent from the floor and 37.5 percent from beyond the arc. He is averaging 3.8 rebounds per game, and is second on the team with 21 assists, an average of 4.2 per game. Daniel has 10 steals and 11 turnovers, a 1.9 assist-to-turnover ratio. In two seasons at Brigham Young, Bobik averaged 5.2 points and 1.8 rebounds per game, and had a single-season best of 34 assists his sophomore season.
Bench play impressive
Oklahoma State has used 10 players on a consistent basis, with the bench providing consistent play. All five players coming off the bench (Joey Graham, Janavor Weatherspoon, Stephen Graham, David Monds and Frans Steyn) are averaging at least 10 minutes per game each, and as a group, theyre averaging just over 30 points per contest.
