Last Time Out
Oklahoma State had four players score in double figures, and five players dished out at least four assists as the Cowboys rolled over the Colorado State Rams, 82-49, Wednesday night in the Mabee Center in Tulsa. What was even more impressive was OSUs defense, which forced 31 turnovers by the Rams, the fourth time in the Sutton era that OSU has forced 30 or more turnovers. The Pokes also limited CSU to just 31.8 percent shooting in the game, including no baskets in the final 12-1/2 minutes. Ivan McFarlin had one of his best overall games in a Cowboy uniform. He only scored nine points, but also had five rebounds, five assists, five steals and four blocked shots.
About Pepperdine
Pepperdine is 1-1 this season after opening the season with two games at home. The Waves lost to Dayton, 90-77, before defeating Colorado, 94-77. Junior guard Terrance Johnson has paced Pepperdine, averaging 21 points and five rebounds in the two contests, leading the squad in both categories. Junior forward Glen McGowan has scored 37 points in the two contests, while freshman guard Shaun Davis has stepped in well at the point-guard spot, dishing out 15 assists while turning the ball over just six times in two games. As a team, Pepperdine is shooting 44 percent from the floor, including 22-of-54 from beyond the arc, an average of 11 treys made per game. The Waves have been outrebounded by an average of nine boards per contest, but has forced 12 more turnovers than they have committed.
Series History
Oklahoma State leads the all-time series with Pepperdine, 2-1. Pepperdine won the first game of the series, 79-61, on Nov. 29, 1986, in Malibu. The Cowboys won the next game a year later on Dec. 14, 1987, an 83-66 victory in Gallagher-Iba Arena. The only other game played in the series was on March 19, 2000, as OSU defeated the Waves, 75-67, in the second round of the NCAA Tournament in Buffalo, N.Y. The Pokes advanced to the Elite Eight a week later.
Non-Conference Record in Gallagher-Iba Arena
Oklahoma State will coninue the non-conference home portion of its schedule when the Cowboys host Pepperdine Saturday night inside Gallagher-Iba Arena. The Pokes are riding a current 29-game home non-conference winning streak that dates back to 1998. OSU has won 108 of its last 109 non-conference games held in Gallagher-Iba Arena since Jan. 7, 1987. The only loss during that span was an 83-81 loss to Florida Atlantic on Dec. 1, 1998, when the Cowboys were ranked 11th in the nation. That loss broke a string of 79-consecutive home non-league wins for OSU. Dating back to 1981, Oklahoma State is 137-7 (.951) in those types of games. The Cowboys have not allowed more than 66 points in their last 25 home non-conference contests.
OSU vs. Non-Conference Opponents
Oklahoma States Cowboys have enjoyed considerable success at home vs. non-conference opponents. However, OSU has also been successful overall vs. non-league foes. Since the 1997-98 season, Oklahoma State has a 65-9 (87.8 percent) record in regular-season non-Big 12 contests. That includes a 10-0 record in 1997-98, a 9-3 mark in 1998-99, an 11-1 record in 1999-2000, a 9-2 mark in 2000-01, a 13-1 record in 2001-02 and an 11-2 finish last year. The Cowboys are 2-0 in non-league games so far this season.
Defense steps up
OSUs defense forced Colorado State into 31 turnovers. It was the fourth time in the Sutton Era that OSU has forced an opponent into at least 30 turnovers. Grambling had 31 turnovers vs. the Pokes on Dec. 15, 1990, Coach Suttons first year as head coach. West Texas A&M had 30 turnovers in a game on Jan. 10, 1994, and Texas A&M committed 30 turnovers on Jan. 30, 1995.
McFarlin Achieves 500 Rebounds
With eight rebounds against Northwestern State, Cowboy senior Ivan McFarlin became the 19th player in school history to grab at least 500 rebounds in his career. McFarlin, who will in all likelihood regain a year of eligibility when he graduates in May, currently has 510 rebounds in his career. A season resembling his first two would put him in the top 10 by seasons end.
I-Mac Moving up the Career Lists
McFarlin also broke the career 700 point plateau with 15 against the Demons. He began the season with 688 points, and now has 712 in his career. With three blocked shots vs. Northwestern State, Ivan also moved into the top 10 on the career deflections list. He deflected a career-best four shots against Colorado State, and now has 70 career blocked shots and sole possession of 10th place on that list.
Allen Returns
Senior Tony Allen picked up this year right where he was last season. In the Cowboys season opener against Northwestern State, Tony scored a game-high 18 points, his 27th career double-figure scoring game in 33 contests. He got his 28th career double-figure scoring game with 10 vs. Colorado State. He also had four assists and just one turnover in that game. The 6-4 guard from Chicago was the Big 12 Newcomer of the Year last season, and received mention for the preseason All-Big 12 squads this year.
Grahams Dont Disappoint
The duo of Joey and Stephen Graham didnt disappoint any Cowboy fans in their first official action in OSU uniforms. Joey, playing mostly in the post, is averaging 12.5 points in the two games while also averaging 5.5 rebounds and 3.5 assists. Stephen, playing mostly on the perimeter, is averaging nine points in 13.5 minutes per contest. The duo from Florida has scored 43 points in 67 minutes off the bench.
Spoon Steps up his Game
Senior Janavor Weatherspoon has improved a great deal on his defensive skills during the offseason. But, he has apparently worked on his offensive abilities as well. Spoon scored 13 points in 16 minutes against Northwestern State, and was a pefect 6-of-6 from the field. He also connected on his only attempt from long range. The 6-1 guard also dished out three assists vs. the Demons in his play off the bench. Against Colorado State, Janavor had seven points in 12 minutes. Hes shooting 81.8 percent from the floor and is averaging 10 points per game.
Lucas Dishing the Rock
Junior John Lucas has dished out 12 assists in his first two games as a Cowboy, an average of six per game. He also has just six turnovers, an assist-to-turnover ratio of just 2-to-1. John is shooting 50 percent from the floor, 40 percent from beyond the arc, and is also averaging three steals per contest. He has the second-most minutes on the team, averaging 29.5 minutes as the point guard.
Spreading the Wealth
All 10 players that have stepped on the floor for Oklahoma State so far this season are averaging at least 13 minutes per game. Ivan McFarlin leads all players with an average of 30.5 minutes per game. John Lucas, Daniel Bobik, Tony Allen and Joey Graham are each averaging at least 20 minutes per contest, while Jason Miller (15.5 minutes per game), David Monds (15), Janavor Weatherspoon (14), Stephen Graham (13.5) and Frans Steyn (13) are all averaging double-figure minutes in playing time.
Dishing the ball
While its still early in the season, Oklahoma State has shown vast improvement in distributing the rock. Last year, the Cowboys had 408 assists on 800 made baskets, an average of one assist for every two made shots. This year, OSU has 45 assists in 67 makes, an average of two assists on every three made shots. In addition, seven different Pokes have been credited with an assist.
Cowboys Light it up
Oklahoma State connected on 36-of-59 shots vs. Northwestern State. While the Demons are still a young squad, the Cowboys shooting appeared much improved over a year ago. Last season, OSU shot better than 50 percent in only 10 games. Oklahoma States 61 percent shooting from the floor against NSU was the highest percentage by an OSU squad since Nov. 27, 2000, when the Cowboys shot 63.6 percent against North Texas in Denton, the last time OSU has shot better than 60 percent in a game.
