November 25, 2003 | Cowgirl Basketball
SCOUTING WICHITA STATE Wichita State is in its first season under the direction of head coach Jane Albright. The Shockers opened the season last Friday with an 81-72 loss to Arkansas. WSU possesses a senior-laden lineup that includes four players in their final year of eligibility and one sophomore. Forward Carlesa Dixon scored a team-high 18 points against the Lady'Backs, while forward Angela Buckner added 15 points and a team-best 16 rebounds. Buckner is one of the most prolific rebounders in the nation, finishing second in the country in rebounds per game in two of her three seasons for the Shockers.
WHAT 2 WATCH 4 OSU will attempt to avoid its first three-game losing streak against the Shockers ... a win would be just the Cowgirls' second all-time in Wichita with their lone victory coming in 1992 ... a victory would be OSU's first non-conference road win (second overall) under head coach Julie Goodenough ... Trisha Skibbe enters the game seven points from taking sole possession of eighth place on the all-time scoring list and six rebounds from taking over the No. 7 slot on the rebounding chart ... the Cowgirl senior is also one blocked shot away from the third spot on the all-time chart and just six away from taking over the No. 2 position.
LAST TIME OUT The Cowgirls opened the regular season on Saturday with a 58-56 loss to Tulsa at the Bertha Teague Classic in Oklahoma City. The Golden Hurricane held the Cowgirls to two points over the final 5:49 en route to winning their second consecutive game in the series for the first time in the teams' 20 meetings. Junior Nina Stone led the Cowgirls offensively in her OSU debut, pouring in 17 points to go along with five rebounds and two assists.
UP NEXT The Cowgirls will travel to the Pacific Northwest to take part in the Seattle Times Classic. The four-team field also includes Gonzaga, Yale and Washington. OSU claimed the tournament title in 1999, posting wins over Portland and Washington. The Cowgirls will meet Yale on Friday at 7 p.m. (CST) before a second-round contest on Saturday evening. OSU has never competed against Yale or Gonzaga. The Cowgirls are 1-1 all-time against Washington, defeating the Huskies, 87-76, in 1999 in Seattle before a 66-59 setback in 2000 in Oklahoma City.
