Cowgirl Basketball Falls to Northwest Sports, 78-67
November 14, 2003 | Cowgirl Basketball
The Cowgirls (1-1) fell behind by as many as 20 in the second half before mounting a late surge to pull within four with 1:26 remaining on a basket by Nina Stone. However, Northwest (2-6) converted four consecutive free throws to pull away and snap their three-game losing streak.
Northwest drilled three-point baskets on three straight trips down the floor to push the lead to 18 with 13:48 on the clock. Cowgirl freshman Kenzie Cole fueled OSU's comeback with a trey of her own to cut the deficit to 10 before senior Trisha Skibbe's free throws with two minutes remaining cut the advantage to single digits, 67-59, for the first time since the 1:39 mark of the first half.
Hindered by 10 turnovers and only two free-throw attempts in the first half, OSU trailed 41-28. In the stanza, Erin Thorn and Reshea Bristol combined for 26 points on 8-of-16 shooting from the floor. The duo finished with 47 of the squad's 78 points on the evening.
Skibbe recorded her second consecutive double-double, finishing the contest with 18 points and 11 rebounds. Junior Nina Stone chipped in with 11 points, while freshman Destanie Sykes grabbed 10 rebounds.
The Cowgirls will return to action on Nov. 22 when they travel to Oklahoma City to take on Tulsa in the Bertha Teague Classic.
