Stillwater, Okla. - Ivan McFarlin, a junior-to-be on the Oklahoma State basketball team, and 11 other Big 12 All-Stars concluded preparation for their 2002 European tour and traveled to Stockholm, Sweden on Monday. Their first game will be Tuesday vs. the Stockholm Basket Club.
"When you're playing around a great team of guys, it really challenges you," said McFarlin following the teams' final practice on Sunday. "We've got great players on the team, and it feels good to be here and be one of the Big 12 representatives showing the world that the Big 12 is one of the most dominant conferences (in the nation)."
Other team members traveling to Scandinavia are Nick Anderson of Texas A&M, Missouri's Travon Bryant, Will Chavis of Texas Tech, Texas' Jason Klotz, Jake Muhleisen of Nebraska, Kansas' Bryant Nash, Pervis Pasco of Kansas State, Baylor's Lawrence Roberts, Jake Sullivan of Iowa State, Oklahoma's Quannas White and Blair Wilson of Colorado. The team is being coached by Baylor's Dave Bliss.
"Ivan McFarlin just does a little bit of everything," said Bliss. "He competes from one end of the floor to the other, and plays really well at both ends. He's great at getting junk baskets around the offensive boards, and is tough on the defensive boards."
This is the sixth-annual Big 12 All-Star team, and the third men's squad. Former Texas Tech head coach and current OSU assistant James Dickey guided the first men's Big 12 All-Stars to a 4-2 record in August of 1998 while touring London, Paris, Belgium and Germany. In 2000, Colorado head coach Ricardo Patton guided the second men's all-star squad to a 5-1 record in Austria and Germany. The women's Big 12 All-Star teams toured in 1999 and 2001, with former OSU coach Dick Halterman leading the 1999 squad to a 5-1 record.
