STILLWATER, Okla. - After serving as the interim head softball coach for the 2002 season, Margaret Rebenar has been recommended as the head coach and will assume the position pending approval by the OSU Board of Regents.
OSU Senior Woman Administrator and Associate Athletic Director Ann Baer made the announcement today with the official start date for Rebenar listed as July 1.
Rebenar has been an integral part of the Cowgirl program since 1980. She served as assistant coach 13 years and associate coach for nine seasons before taking over the helm in 2001.
"I am very excited about the opportunity to lead and mentor this group of young ladies," said Rebenar. "I believe that this group can make a difference and it is great to be the official head coach at Oklahoma State."
Under her leadership, the Cowgirls have compiled a 895-373-3 record, including a 29-23 mark in 2002. She has led the team to nine conference titles, eight regional titles and nine Women's College World Series appearances.
During the 2002 campaign, the Cowgirls set a school record with 44 home runs and also won eight games to open the season, the most since the 1997 season.
Rebenar was instrumental in the Cowgirls most recent WCWS appearance in 1998, taking on the role of head coach and leading the team to a fourth place finish nationally with a 42-19 record.
"Margaret has been an important part of the success of the Cowgirl program for 23 years," Baer said. "We are excited to have her as the head coach and know she will lead the team in the right direction."
As a pitcher in the professional softball league, Rebenar posted a 31-10 record. She was named the league's Most Valuable Player in 1979, and was an Amateur Softball Association All-American in 1982 and 1983.
Rebenar earned her bachelor's degree in physical education from Cal Poly-Pomona in 1980 and her master's in physical education from OSU in 1982.
