Cowgirl Softball Falls To Texas, 2-1, In 12 Innings

Austin, Texas - An illegal pitch call in the bottom of the 12th sent home the winning run as the Texas Longhorns defeated Oklahoma State, 2-1, here Sunday afternoon in Big 12 softball action. With the loss, OSU finishes 8-10 in league play and will be the No. 6 seed in the Big 12 Tournament, facing No. 3 Nebraska on Friday at 11 a.m.
It was a pitching duel all afternoon long, as OSU's Cami Carter and UT's Amy Bradford started the game. Bradford gave up must one hit in three innings before being replaced by freshman ace Cat Osterman in the fourth.
Carter threw five scoreless innings, giving up four hits while striking out three before stepping aside for Cowgirl Lauren Bay. Both Osterman and Bay threw shutout ball until the 10th inning, when the international tiebreaker rule came into effect.
Oklahoma State put a run on the board first when Erika Ennis, pinch running at second, went to third on a single by Calli Behmer and scored when Megan Carey reached on an error.
Texas responded in the bottom of the inning with a run of its own. Tamara Poppe scored on an RBI double by Alexis Garcia. However, Bay thew out the next batter and forced a flyout by Lindsay Gardner to end the inning.
After a scoreless 11th, Jenny Kipp advanced to third on a sacrifice bunt by Casey O'Neill, but Osterman struck out the next two batters, upping her game total to 18, to end the threat.
The Longhorns scored the winning run when Wynter Turner advanced Deeanna Williams to third on a sacrifice bunt, who then scored when the third-base umpire called an illegal pitch on Bay.
The Cowgirls fall to 29-21 overall and 8-10 in Big 12 play. With Kansas splitting a doubleheader with Iowa State on Sunday, OSU will face Nebraska in the first round of the Big 12 Tournament as the No. 6 seed.
