OKLAHOMA CITY, Okla. - The Cowgirls were shutout in both games here Friday in the first round of the Big 12 Tournament. Oklahoma State dropped the first contest, 2-0, to Nebraska and fell to Baylor, 4-0, in an elimination game.
In the first game, All-Big 12 pitcher, Lauren Bay and the Cowgirl defense worked out of jams during two early innings, but a lack of offensive production and a sixth inning charge by the Huskers was too much.
With no outs and runners on first and second in the first frame, the Cowgirls turned their fifth double play of the season to avoid the early rally by Nebraska.
With one down in the bottom of the fourth Nebraska again threatened, but the Cowgirl defense came thru, forcing a ground out by Peaches James and a Leigh Suhr line out to end the inning.
The sixth inning would be the kicker for Oklahoma State, as Nebraska used a pair of hits to put two runs on the board.
The Huskers loaded the bases with one out and Peaches James turned on the offense, singling to right field to bring in both runs for Nebraska. The rally continued when runners advanced to second and third on a passed ball before Bay struck out Cindy Roethemeyer to end the inning.
Lauren Bay took the loss for the Cowgirls, falling to 19-14 on the season. Bay fanned eight batters in the contest to up her season total to 311 and break the Oklahoma State single season record of 310 held by Melanie Roche since 1993. She also walked five and gave up two runs on three hits during the contest.
James (19-7) picked up the win for the Huskers, striking out four, walking one and giving up two hits.
The Cowgirls faced Baylor in an afternoon elimination game and offense was again the weakest link. Baylor on the other hand, did not waste any time getting on the board, posting two runs in the bottom of the first and never looking back.
Cami Carter started the game for the Cowgirls and the Lady Bears came at her early when Stacy Hundley got things started with a single up the middle and then scored on a Sarah Caudle double.
Baylor continued to roll as Caudle advanced to third on a throwing error by Jade Lindly and crossed the plate on a Kristen Lancaster single to give Baylor an early, 2-0 advantage. With one out in the inning, Bay entered in relief and closed out the inning with a ground out and line out.
The Cowgirls were able to touch Baylor's Joni Miller for just one hit on the afternoon and Baylor added two insurance runs in the sixth to clench the win.
With runners on first and second in the bottom of the sixth, Baylor had a double stolen base followed by a wild pitch that brought a run across the plate. Nan Wilkins got in on the action, contributing a sacrifice fly to right field that brought home the final run of the game.
With the loss, Carter falls to 10-9 on the year while giving up two runs on three hits. Bay threw the final 5-2/3 innings in relief, striking out three, walking two and giving up two runs.
The Cowgirls (29-23) will lie in wait until Sunday, May 12 when learn if they receive a bid to NCAA Regionals.
