NORMAN, Okla. - Oklahoma State travelled to Norman for round two of Bedlam softball and fell to the Sooners, 5-4. The Cowgirls attempted to pull the upset over No. 12 Oklahoma, but a two-run single in the bottom of the 10th sealed the game for the Sooners.
Both the Cowgirls and Sooners got the game started with a home run in the first inning of play. With two outs and a runner on first, Ryan Realmuto sent her 11th homer of the season over the left field fence to give the Cowgirls the early 2-0 advantage.
Not to be outdone, Oklahoma's Kelli Braitsch provided the offensive firepower for the Sooners in the bottom of the frame, sending a solo shot into the bleachers behind right center.
The teams continued to have a battle with the long ball as Oklahoma hit its second home run in the top of the third, a two-run dinger by Leah Gulla, that gave OU a 3-2 lead after three.
Six zeros went up thru the next three innings of play, before the Cowgirls tied it up in the top of the seventh.
With one out in the final inning of regulation, Calli Behmer was hit by a pitch and Erika Ennis entered as a pinch runner. Things continued to click for the Cowgirls and Ennis moved into scoring position on a sacrifice bunt by Nicci Quiroz.
With the game on the line, Jamie Koshmider entered as a pinch-hitter and came up big for the Cowgirls. The sophomore collected her first hit of the season, sending a double deep into right field to bring Ennis home for the game-tieing run.
Things turned stagnant at the plate and neither team was able to break the standstill until the tenth when the international tie-breaker rule went into effect.
Nicci Quiroz started the 10th on second and Koshmider again played a part in scoring threat as she moved Quiroz to third on a sacrifice bunt. Jenny Kipp got the Cowgirl fans on their feet, sending a single to right field to punch Quiroz home for the go-ahead run.
One run would not be enough for the Cowgirls to pull the upset, as the Sooners would score two in the bottom of the frame on a Christina Enea single to right field to claim the victory. Lauren Bay was saddled with the loss, falling to 19-11 on the year.
Bay went the duration for the Cowgirls, fanning 11 batters, issuing one walk and giving up four runs.
Oklahoma State (29-19) closes out the Big 12 regular season with a road trip to Texas this weekend. The Cowgirls will take on the No. 14 Longhorns at 1 p.m. on Saturday and Sunday.
