Stillwater, Okla. - Oklahoma State junior Ryan Realmuto sent a pitch deep over the left field fence with the bases loaded, propelling the Cowgirls to a win in the second game of the twinbill and a sweep of the Iowa State Cyclones here Monday afternoon. OSU won the first game, 1-0, in the bottom of the seventh, and Realmuto's homer, her 10th of the season, gave the Cowgirls an 8-4 win in nine innings.
Iowa State hurler Erica Martinez, who pitched all 16 innings for ISU, walked Stephanie Hodges to load the bases before Realmuto's one-out dinger. Nicci Quiroz led off the inning with a base hit, and stole second before pinch-hitter Jamie Koshmider walked. Jenny Kipp sacrificed both runners over, and Casey O'Neill followed that with a double that scored Quiroz and tied the game for the second-straight inning. Then came Hodges walk.
Iowa State had taken an early 2-0 lead in the second on a two-run double by Laura Browning. Kelly Wardein walked with one out, and Katie Ruby reached on an error by Cowgirl second-baseman Calli Behmer. Both runners scored on the two-bagger by Browning.
OSU cut the lead in half in the bottom of the third, when Kipp, the leadoff hitter, walked and stole second. She then scored on a single to right field by Hodges. The Cowgirls tied the game in the fifth in much the same fashion. With two outs, O'Neill singled, stole second and reached third when nobody covered second base and Ruby threw the ball into the outfield. O'Neill then scored on a base hit by Hodges, who went 3-for-4 with two RBIs.
With the scored tied after regulation, Iowa State scored in the top of the eighth when Heather McLatchie, pinch running for Misty Kimura, was sacrificed to second and stole third. She then scored on a triple by Adi Blackmon that was nearly caught by a diving Nicci Quiroz in left field.
Oklahoma State returned the favor in the bottom half of the inning. For the third game in a row, sophomore Jade Lindly reached home plate in an unusual manner. With two outs, Behmer struck out, but reached first on a wild pitch. Lindly scored from third on the play, but pinch hitter Lauren Bay was tagged out going for third.
Lindsey Herrin led off the ninth with a solo home run, but it was all for naught as the Cowgirls scored five in the bottom of the inning. OSU pitcher Cami Carter picked up the win, her 10th of the season, after going the distance and striking out seven while walking just one. The first game was a pitchers dual between OSU's Bay and ISU's Martinez. Bay threw a three-hit shutout, striking out eight while walking none. Martinez had 11 strikeouts in teh first game and 21 on the day, but gave up a critical run in the bottom of the seventh.
In a game that saw 13 zeros on the scoreboard entering the bottom of the final frame, Lindly walked to lead off the inning. With one out, she advanced to third on a base hit by Behmer. Quiroz then laid down a perfect squeeze bunt as Lindly slid between the cather's legs to plate the winning run.
Bay improved to 19-10 with the win. Oklahoma State is now 29-18 overall and 8-7 in the Big 12, over .500 in conference action for the first time this season. The Cowgirls will travel to Norman, Okla., on Wednesday night to face bedlam-rival Oklahoma at 6:30 p.m.
