STILLWATER, Okla. - Oklahoma State's softball team fell to fourth-ranked Nebraska, 3-2, in nine innings here Saturday at Cowgirl Stadium. The two teams combined for five runs, all of which were scored on home runs.
Cowgirl pitcher, Lauren Bay, faced the minimum in the first four innings of play, fanning 10 of the 12 batters. With two outs in the top of the fifth, Nebraska's Peaches James, ended the no-hitter, knocking a single to center field. Kira Boerkircher came in to pinch run was effective immediatley, stealing second to get in scoring position.
Amanda Buchholz stepped up to the plate and sent a two-run dinger over the fence to give the Huskers a 2-0 advantage. Buchholz's home run was the first Bay has given up this year.
With the game on the line in the bottom of the seventh, the Cowgirl offense got to work. Ryan Realmuto led off with a double to center field and Erika Ennis entered as a pinch runner to bring speed to the base paths.
Jade Lindly had the clutch home run to even the score and send the game into extra innings. Lindly has nine long balls on the year and is now one away from tieing the school record set by Jamie Foutch in 1997.
Neither team was able to produce offensively in the eight, but the Nebraska bats were hot once again in the top of the ninth. After Nicole Trimboli struck out to lead off the inning, Amber Burgess hit her seventh long ball of the year for the game winning run.
With the win Saturday, Nebraska (27-5) has won 21 straight games this season, its last loss was to Illinois-Chicago, 5-2, on Feb. 22.
Bay (13-6) took the loss on the mound despite tossing 19 strikeouts. Bay fanned 15 batters in the first seven innings of play and picked up four more in the extra innings. The lefthander allowed four hits in the game and walked two.
With the performance, Bay ties a school record set by Melanie Roche vs Kansas on May 2, 1992 for strikeouts in a game.
"It was a well-played game," said Head Coach Margaret Rebenar. "I told the girls to keep their chins up and come ready for another battle tomorrow."
The Cowgirls (20-10) look to avenge the loss as they wrap up the two-game set with the Huskers Sunday at noon.
