LAWRENCE, Kan. - Oklahoma State's softball team split in its Big 12 opener, falling to Kansas, 4-0, in game one, and getting revenge in game two with the victory, 4-1, here Wednesday at Jayhawk Field.
In game one, the Jayhawks came up big in the bottom of the second, scoring three runs. Leah Tabb led off with a double down the left field line. Sandy Smith reached on an error and the runners advanced on a Amy Hulse ground-out. Dani May collected the RBI with a single up the middle that also bumped Smith to third.
May then stole second and Shelly Musser singled and advanced on an error. The error proved to be costly, as both Smith and May crossed the plate to give the Jayhawks a 3-0 lead.
Christi Musser scored the final run in the bottom of the fifth when she and Tabb hit back-to-back triples.
Cami Carter (8-4) took the loss on the mound, allowing 11 hits and striking out one.
Kansas' Kara Pierce (7-4) threw the first no-hitter of her career against the Cowgirls, striking out five and walking four.
In the second game, OSU sent four over the fence to get the win. The first came on a solo shot by Lauren Bay to lead off the second inning and give the Cowgirls the early lead.
Kansas answered with a single run in the bottom of the inning to tie the game. Tabb led off with a base hit and advanced when Megan Urquhart was hit by a pitch. Tabb then stole third and advanced on a throwing error by the Cowgirls.
OSU took the lead for good in the fourth with two home runs. Megan Carey and Jade Lindly each had a solo shot to give the Cowgirls a 3-1 advantage.
Lindly proved to have the hot hand in the game as she blasted her second long ball of the game over the left field fence in the top of the sixth.
Bay (12-5) fanned 14 batters and allowed one hit en route to the win.
The four home runs in game two give the Cowgirls 33 on the year and break the season record, 30, set in 2000.
Oklahoma State (20-9) returns to action this weekend, when they host Big 12 Preseason favorite, Nebraska, at Cowgirl Stadium. The Cowgirls and Huskers will square off at 2 p.m. on Saturday and at noon on Sunday.
