STILLWATER, Okla. - Oklahoma State's softball team defeated NAIA powerhouse, Oklahoma City, Thursday at Cowgirl Stadium, 2-0. Junior Lauren Bay threw her fifth shutout of the season as the Cowgirls improved to 18-8 overall.
Designated player, Megan Carey, led off the second inning with a base hit and advanced to second on a Calli Behmer walk. Nicci Quiroz had her fifth sacrifice hit of the season to move the runners. Summer Younk followed with a sacrifice fly to left field and earned the RBI.
In the top of the sixth the Stars posed their only scoring threat of the game and the Cowgirls had a strong defensive stand to ensure the shutout. Heather Martin led off the inning with the only OCU hit of the game, a double to right center. Emy Makus came in as a pinch runner and advanced to third on a Alexandra Boily bunt.
Tiffiny Burris grounded out to pitcher Lauren Bay to give the Stars two outs. Katy Letts reached on a walk and Shelly McGowen also grounded out to Bay to end the inning.
OSU added an insurance run in the bottom of the sixth. Carey (3-for-3) had her third hit of the evening and advanced to second on a Behmer ground out. Jade Lindly entered the game for Nicci Quiroz and came through with a RBI single to score Carey and provide the final, 2-0, margin.
Bay (11-5) picked up the win on the mound, striking out nine batters, walking two and allowing one hit.
The Cowgirls return to action Tuesday, March 19, when they travel to Wichita State to take on the Shockers at 4 p.m.
