Monday's Game
Oklahoma State travels to Columbia, Mo., for a Big Monday game with the Missouri Tigers on Monday, Feb. 25, at 8 p.m. in the Hearnes Center. The Cowboys are 22-6 overall and 9-5 in Big 12 Conference action after a 77-64 win over the Baylor Bears Saturday afternoon in Stillwater. Missouri is 19-9 overall, 8-6 in league play after a 96-83 win over Colorado in Boulder on Saturday. OSU will be looking for its fifth-straight win and sixth-consecutive conference victory.
Last Time Out For Oklahoma State
Ivan McFarlin recorded his fifth double-double of the season with 20 points and 14 rebounds, and Fredrik J?nz?n picked up his fifth double-double this year as OSU defeated Baylor, 77-64. McFarlin was 10-of-15 from the floor and also had two blocked shots. Victor Williams scored 18 points for the Cowboys, and Melvin Sanders added 16. Oklahoma State outrebounded the Bears, 45-39, and shot 46.8 percent from the floor, compared to just 37.9 percent for BU. OSU had 30 second-chance points off 19 offensive rebounds, while Baylor scored just 15 off 19 offensive boards. Freshman Lawrence Roberts had a double-double with 22 points and 15 rebounds for Baylor.
OSU-Mizzou on Television
Oklahoma State makes its first appearance on Big Monday this week as the Cowboys face the Missouri Tigers. Ron Franklin will handle the play-by-play duties, while Jon Sundvold will provide expert analysis. The Cowboys are 32-20 all-time on ESPN, including a 28-18 mark in the Sutton Era. OSU is 2-0 this season on ESPN, defeating Cincinnati, 69-62, and Iowa State, 69-66.
Sutton Earns 700th Career Victory
Coach Eddie Sutton became just the 18th coach in NCAA history to reach the 700-victory plateau, and the 14th at the Division I level. He became just the sixth active coach to reach that mark, joining Jim Phelan, Bob Knight, Lefty Drissell, Jerry Tarkanian and Lou Henson. Coach Sutton was the eighth-fastest ever to 700 victories by games played (975), and with one more win, will have the second-most wins ever through the first 32 seasons of a career behind Dean Smith, surpassing Bob Knight.
Coaching Wins, through 32 seasons, last school (years)
1. Dean Smith, North Carolina (1962-93) - 774
2. Eddie Sutton, Oklahoma State (1970-89, 90-2002) - 701
Bob Knight, Indiana (1966-97) - 701
4. Adolph Rupp, Kentucky (1931-52, 54-63) - 686
5. Henry Iba, Oklahoma A&M (1930-61) - 655
J?nz?n Earns Academic All-District Honors
Fredrik J?nz?n has been named to the District VI Academic All-America team, it was announced by the College Sports Information Directors of America. The district is comprised of universities in the states of Arkansas, Louisiana, Mississippi, New Mexico, Oklahoma and Texas. J?nz?n, who carries a 3.267 grade point average in international business, is joined on the District VI team by Donny Beacham, a sophomore at Texas-Arlington with a 3.65 GPA in information systems, Eric Channing, a senior at New Mexico State majoring in management with a 3.89 GPA, Omar-Seli Mance, a junior at Rice with a 3.298 in mathematics, and McEverett Powers, a senior at Texas-San Antonio majoring in information services with a 3.50 GPA.
20 Wins Becomes the Norm at Oklahoma State
For the fifth-straight season, and the 10th time in the Coach Sutton era, Oklahoma State has reached the 20-win mark for a single season. In fact, this is the 24th time in OSU history that a team has reached 20 wins, and the third time that the Cowboys have won 20 or more games in five-consecutive seasons. OSU won 20 or more in six-straight seasons from 1944 until 1949, and accomplished that feat five times from 1991-95. Below is a list of the most wins in a four-year span at Oklahoma State, with a minimum of 90 victories.
OSU-Mizzou: The Series
Missouri leads the all-time series with Oklahoma State, 67-36, including a 40-6 mark in Columbia. However, two of those six OSU wins have come in the last three trips to the Hearnes Center. The Cowboys have won the last three meetings, and five of the last six.
Last Time Out For Mizzou
Clarence Gilbert hit 12 3-pointers, a Big 12 record, and had 40 points as Missouri beat Colorado 96-83 on Saturday. Gilbert hit four free throws in the last two minutes, his only points that didn't come from 3-pointers. The previous Big 12 record for 3-pointers by one player was 10, by Al Coleman of Texas in 1997. Missouri had 20 3-pointers total, also a Big 12 record. The old record was 18. Missouri dominated from the perimeter, but Colorado kept the Tigers within sight thanks to Michel Morandais' career-high 33 points. Colorado trailed by up to 16 in the first half but came alive halfway through the second. The win snapped a two-game losing streak for Missouri. Colorado has lost five in a row. Ten of Missouri's 16 baskets in the first half were 3-pointers, including six from Gilbert. Gilbert's scoring gave him 1,541 career points, pushing him into seventh place among all-time Big 12 scorers. Colorado was without senior captain D.J. Harrison, who broke his hand in Wednesday's loss to Kansas State.
Last Time Against Mizzou
Oklahoma State posted a 69-66 victory last year in the Cowboys first game since the Jan. 27 plane crash in Colorado. The Cowboys used a second-half run to take the lead and held on at the end. Fredrik J?nz?n tied a career best with 26 points, Maurice Baker had 22 and Andre Williams had 15 rebounds and four blocks. The Cowboys used a 13-4 run midway through the second half to take a 59-52 lead. Missouri fought back and made it a one-point game, 65-64, on Brian Grawer's steal and layup with 1:39 left. Baker sank four free throws in the final 45.5 seconds to keep the Cowboys up by three. Missouri had a chance to tie it with 3.4 seconds left, but Melvin Sanders stole the inbound pass and the clock ran out.
Last Time in Columbia
Oklahoma State's 10th-ranked Cowboys held off a late rally for a 84-72 victory over Missouri in Columbia two years ago. Desmond Mason had 25 points and nine rebounds for Oklahoma State. Joe Adkins scored all but two of his 21 points in the second half, and Brian Montonati had 16 points and 11 rebounds before fouling out with 3:43 to go. The Cowboys also held Missouri to 34 percent shooting, its worst in conference play. At least one Missouri player wasn't impressed. Clarence Gilbert felt that way even though he was 1-for-11 with three points, 10 below his average. Kareem Rush, who averaged 25 points the previous week, was held to 13. Keyon Dooling led Missouri with 19 points, but was 5-for-15. The Tigers were seemingly out of it with eight minutes to go, trailing 61-41. Missouri hit five 3-pointers the rest of the way, and trailed only 76-72 after Rush connected from long range with 51 seconds to go. Oklahoma State escaped when Doug Gottlieb, who had 12 assists, answered that basket by connecting on a court-length inbound pass to Mason for a dunk. Missouri made a game of it by hounding Oklahoma State into a season-high 24 turnovers.
Up Next: Texas A&M in the Regular-Season Finale
Oklahoma State will close out the regular season on Saturday, March 2, as the Cowboys host the Texas A&M Aggies. The game will be televised on Cowboy Sports Properties, and will start at 7 p.m. It will also be Senior Night, as Oklahoma State honors its three seniors - Maurice Baker, Antonie Broxsie, and Fredrik J?nz?n.
Cowboys In The Polls
Oklahoma State is currently ranked 13th in the Associated Press poll and 14th in the ESPN/USA Today Coaches Poll. The Cowboys moved up in both polls after defeating No. 4 Oklahoma and Texas A&M on the road last week. OSU's No. 5 ranking earlier this season was the highest ranking OSU has achieved since the Cowboys were ranked second nationally in mid-February of 1992. OSU was ranked No. 2 for two weeks before dropping back to eighth that year. Three of Oklahoma State's opponents this season are ranked in the top 25 of both polls (Kansas, Oklahoma, Cincinnati), while two more (Texas, Texas Tech) are receiving votes in each of the polls.
McFarlin Posting Big Numbers
Oklahoma State sophomore Ivan McFarlin is showing the league what the coaching staff has known all along - he's a prime-time player. Against Nebraska, he set career highs in both points and rebounds with 20 and 17, respectively. It was the most rebounds by a Cowboy since Bryant Reeves had 20 vs. Kansas in 1995. In I-Mac's first season with the Cowboys (he was a partial qualifier last year), he has 18 double-figure scoring games with a season-high of 22 points vs. Oklahoma. He also recorded his first double-double in the second game of the season with 17 points and 10 rebounds vs. Austin Peay. He had back-to-back double-doubles with 10 and 10 vs. Arkansas and 11 and 11 vs. Ball State. He had four-straight double-figure rebounding games through one stint in the season. In the first exhibition game of the season, I-Mac had 20 rebounds, including 10 on each end of the court. He leads the team in steals with 42 and blocked shots with 34. He is second in the Big 12 in field-goal percentage , connecting on 62.7 percent of his overall shots.
Gadson Steps to the Forefront
Despite knee surgery at the beginning of the season that slowed his learning of Coach Sutton's system, Cheyne Gadson has come into his own the last few games. He had a breakout game at Oklahoma as he set a career-high with 14 points on 6-of-7 shooting and also had seven rebounds. Against Oklahoma in Stillwater, he scored 10 points and had five boards. At Texas A&M, Gadson scored a career-high 17 points on 7-of-12 shooting and also had three three-pointers. He also dished out five assists. In the last four games, he is averaging 11.8 points per game. He also had a career high with nine rebounds vs. Texas.
I-Mac's Rebounds Rank High in First Year
Sophomore Ivan McFarlin, in his first year on the court for Oklahoma State, is one of the top first-season rebounders in Cowboy history. Only four former Cowboys have had more rebounds in their first year as a player for OSU than I-Mac. Andy Hopson leads all first-year rebounders with 352 in 1972-73, his sophomore season. Prior to 1973-74, freshmen were not allowed to play on the varsity team. Ivan is currently tied with Bob Buck, who had 214 rebounds in 1969-70, his junior year after transferring to OSU. Here is a list of the all-time first-year rebounders:
Player, Class (Season) Reb
Andy Hopson, So. (1972-73) - 352
Byron Houston, Fr. (1988-89) - 251
Don Youman, Jr. (1978-79) - 242
James King, So. (1962-63) - 218
Ivan McFarlin, So. (2001-02) - 214
Bob Buck, Jr. (1969-70) - 214
Victor Williams Showing Leadership
While fellow starting guard Maurice Baker was hampered by groin injury and now by a sprained ankle, junior Victor Williams has stepped up his game. He is averaging 14.8 points per game over the last seven contests and 5.3 assists per game in the last five. Vic is second on the team in scoring with a 13 ppg average, and is also second on the team in free-throw percentage (.746). He has 113 assists, leading the team, and 63 turnovers, a 1.79 assist-to-turnover ratio. He recorded the first double-double of his career with 12 points and 10 rebounds vs. Fresno State.
J?nz?n Moving Up Scoring Chart
With eight points vs. Texas A&M, senior forward Fredrik J?nz?n moved up to 17th on the all-time career scoring list. He surpassed Joe Atkinson, who had 1,145 points in his career. J?nz?n currently has 1,177 points in his four-year career, and needs 13 to move past Joe Adkins, 21 to surpass Arlen Clark and 23 to move past Darwyn Alexander and into the top 14 all-time.
J?nz?n Eclipses 700 Rebound Mark
Senior forward Fredrik J?nz?n pulled down four rebounds vs. Texas A&M, eclipsing the 700-career rebound mark. He now has 717 boards, and is in ninth place on the career rebounding charts. He became just the seventh player in school history to record 1,100 points and 700 rebounds in a career.
J?nz?n, Sanders Consistently in the Starting Lineup
Senior Fredrik J?nz?n and junior Melvin Sanders have started 63 and 57 consecutive games, respectively, for OSU, ranking fifth and eighth on the Cowboy consecutive starts list. J?nz?n will be unable to move up any, needing 14 to tie Bryant Reeve for fifth place. Sanders can move past Raymond Crenshaw for seventh place with three more starts.
OSU Post Players Host Block Party
Through 28 games, OSU has blocked 100 shots, and average of 3.6 swats per game. Ivan McFarlin leads the team with 34, while Andre Williams has 27. Antoine Broxsie has 15 blocked shots, while Fredrik J?nz?n has 12. Maurice Baker and Melvin Sanders each have five, and Jack Marlow has one. Williams had four vs. Cincinnati, and three vs. Northwestern State, Texas and Texas Tech, while Broxsie had three vs. TCU, New Orleans and Northwestern State. McFarlin had three vs. North Texas, Ball State, Nebraska, Kansas State and Oklahoma.
Andre Williams Fifth on All-Time Blocked Shots Chart
Andre Williams recorded four blocks in the first game of the seeason vs. Cincinnati, and has 26 total this year. He became just the fifth player in school history to reach the century mark in blocked shots in his career. The amazing fact is that he accomplished that feat in just two seasons, the second Cowboy ever to do so. Byron Houston had 131 blocks after his sophomore year. Andre has had six multiple-block games this season, including four vs. Cincinnati and three vs. Northwestern State, Texas and Texas Tech.
Baker Earns All-District Honor
Cowboy senior Maurice Baker was named to the National Association of Basketball Coaches District 12 first-team, it was announced Tuesday. Baker joins Drew Gooden and Kirk Hinrich of Kansas, Kareem Rush of Missouri and Oklahoma's Hollis Price. The country is broken down into 15 districts, recognizing the best men's collegiate basketball student-athletes in the nation. The 75 players are now eligible for the NABC/Pontiac Division I All-America team, to be announced at the conclusion of the 2001-02 NCAA men's basketball season.
Baker Nearing Top 25 in Scoring
With 19 points vs. Texas Tech, Maurice Baker surpassed four former Cowboys and moved into 26th place on the career scoring list. He moved past Clayton Carter (939 points), Ed Odom (945), Don Johnson (945) and Eli Johnson (946). He needs 16 points to move past Larry Hawk and into the top 25 all-time. Baker has the second-most points by a Cowboy with just two years at OSU, trailing Director of Basketball Operations Brooks Thompson (996 points in 1993-94) by 41 points.
Comeback Cowboys
OSU has trailed every opponent this season at some point in the game, including eight games where the Cowboys were in double-digit deficits. In two of those games, OSU came back to win. The first was vs. Arkansas, when the Cowboys trailed the Razorbacks by 22 points midway through the first period. OSU ended up winning that game by nine. Against Texas Tech in Stillwater, OSU fell behind by as many as 15 points with 12 minutes remaining in the game, but defeated Tech, 64-62. In the other six games, OSU lost by single digits in four of those.
Sutton First Member of 250-250 Club
After some dilligent research by Gary Johnson at the NCAA, it has been determined that Coach Eddie Sutton is the first coach in NCAA history to win 250 games at two different Division I schools. Coach Sutton picked up 260 wins while at Arkansas, and currently has 271 at Oklahoma State. He picked up his 250th win with the Cowboys on Nov. 16, 2001, vs. Cincinnati. Lou Henson of New Mexico State has just joined the 250-250 win club. He had 423 wins at Illinois and has 254 this season at NMSU. He picked up his 250th win with the Aggies on Jan. 31 of this year vs. New Orleans. Connecticut's Jim Calhoun had 349 wins entering the season at UConn, and had 248 victories at Northeastern.
OSU in the Big 12 Statistics
Oklahoma State ranks in the top-four of the league in several statistical categories. The Cowboys are first in scoring defense at 63.7 points per game and field-goal percentage at 40.2 percent, and are second in three-point field goal percentage defense at 29.8 percent. The Cowboys are third in rebounding offense (40.5 rpg), rebounding defense (33.3 rpg) and rebounding margin (plus 7.2 rebounds per game). OSU is fourth in scoring margin (plus 9.2 points per game), as well as offensive rebounds (15.11per contest) and defensive rebounds (25.37).
