Oklahoma State's Cowgirl basketball team (12-13 overall, 4-8 Big 12) will look to win its second consecutive game at home over a ranked opponent when No. 10 Iowa State (19-5, 7-5) comes to Gallagher-Iba Arena for a 2 p.m. contest on Sunday.
The Cowgirls ended a four-game losing skid on Thursday night with a 58-55 win over No. 16 Texas Tech, while ISU comes to town having won its last five games, three of which came on the road, after defeating Colorado 85-75 last Saturday.
The Cyclones are led by preseason All-American Angie Welle, who currently leads the nation in shooting percentage (69 percent). Welle is averaging a double-double (19.8 pts., and 11.2 rbs.) per contest while turning in a Big 12-best 13 double-doubles this season. Junior guard Lindsey Wilson leads the squad in scoring (20.1 pts) and assists (6.0).
OSU leads the all-time series against ISU 21-16 and has won nine of the 16 contests played in Stillwater. However, the Cyclones have won six straight with the Cowgirls' last win coming at the 1996 Big 12 Tournament, a 67-60 overtime triumph.
Sunday's matchup will be televised by Fox Sports Net with Bill Land (play-by-play) and Brenda Van Lengen (color analyst) calling the action.
COMING UP
OSU will travel to Lincoln, Neb., to take on the Nebraska Cornhuskers at
7 p.m. on Wednesday. Last season, the Cowgirls' notched a 77-66 win to cut
the Huskers' advantage in the all-time series to 25-22. Nebraska has won the
last three meetings on its home floor, including a 75-71 overtime win over
the Cowgirls two years ago.
LAST TIME OUT
Oklahoma State toppled its second nationally-ranked opponent of the season,
Kansas State being the other, on Thursday night when it sent No. 16 Texas
Tech home with a 58-55 loss. After leading 30-24 at the half, Tech built the
lead to 10 points five minutes into the second half before the Cowgirls
began to chip away. Junior Thia Willis drilled a three-pointer at the
six-minute mark to give OSU a 47-46 lead before Amber Tarr nailed one of her
own to put Tech back in front on its next possession. Willis hit a long
three-point attempt on OSU's next trip to regain the advantage. Senior Tari
Cummings came up big for the Cowgirls down the stretch, converting a
three-point play with the Cowgirls trailing 55-54 and eight seconds
remaining to put OSU in front for good. The Pocola, Okla., native, who led
all scorers with 19 points, scored the Cowgirls' final six points to secure
the win and snap OSU's 11-game losing streak to the Lady Raiders. Willis and
sophomore Trisha Skibbe finished with 13 points apiece, while senior Nikki
Lawrence came off the bench to tie a career high with nine rebounds.
