Saturday's Game
Oklahoma State travels to College Station, Texas, this weekend to face the Texas A&M Aggies on Saturday, Feb. 16, at 5 p.m. The game will be televised by Fox Sports Net. OSU is 19-6 overall and 6-5 in Big 12 Conference action after a 79-72 overtime win against Oklahoma on Wednesday. A&M is 9-16, 3-8 after a 69-38 loss at Kansas State on Tuesday.
Last Time Out For Oklahoma State
Ivan McFarlin scored a career-high 22 points, including eight in the overtime period, as Oklahoma State defeated bedlam-rival Oklahoma, 79-72, in the 200th meeting between the two schools on the hardcourt. Melvin Sanders added 12 points and grabbed 11 rebounds, recording his first double-double of the season and the second of his career. OSU shot 46.3 percent from the floor, compared to just 32.8 percent for the Sooners. OU did outrebound the Cowboys, 50-39, but committed 15 turnovers, compared to seven for OSU. Fredrik J?nz?n scored 19 points while all five starters scored in double figures. J?nz?n and McFarlin were a combined 11-of-11 from the free-throw line, while the rest of the team was 5-of-16 (31.3 percent). Meanwhile, Oklahoma shot 88 percent from the line, and made six three pointers, compared to just one for OSU.
Recapping the Bedlam Game
Oklahoma State scored 18 points in the overtime period vs. Oklahoma, the most points in an OT period since Nov. 26, 1993, when the Cowboys scored 24 points in the overtime period of a 113-102 win against Providence in Tulsa. It was the second-most points in an overtime period in the Coach Sutton era. OSU's win over the fourth-ranked Sooners was its first win over a top-five opponent since March 24, 1995, when the Cowboys defeated third-ranked Wake Forest, 71-66, en route to the Final Four. OSU had lost eight straight to top-five teams in that span. The Cowboys are 12-37 all-time vs. top-five teams.
OSU-A&M on Television
Oklahoma State's game Saturday afternoon vs. Texas A&M will be broadcast on Fox Sports Net. Bill Land will handle the play-by-play duties, while Jim Haller will provide expert analysis. It will be just the second Oklahoma State game ever on Fox Sports. The first was on Dec. 30, 1999, when OSU lost to LSU, 63-53.
OSU-A&M: The Series
Oklahoma State leads the all-time series with Texas A&M, 17-8, including a 7-5 record in College Station. The Aggies won the first five meetings in the series, which dates back to 1917-18. OSU has won the last three, 11 of the last 12 and 17 of the last 20. The Cowboys are 9-1 since the inception of the Big 12 Conference, and 10-1 in the Coach Sutton Era. Last Time Out For Texas A&M
Texas A&M was held to a season-low 38 points in a 69-38 loss to Kansas State in Manhattan on Tuesday night. The Aggies had no players score in double figures, although Bradley Jackson did score nine on 4-of-7 shooting. As a team, A&M shot 35.4 percent from the floor, had 18 turnovers and just six offensive rebounds. The Aggies went into the lockerroom at halftime trailing, 37-13, after shooting just 25 percent for the half. Kansas State had four players score in double figures, including three players off the bench. Phineas Atchison and Nick Williams each scored 13 points, while Gilson DeJesus scored 11.
Comeback Cowboys
OSU has trailed every opponent this season at some point in the game, including eight games where the Cowboys were in double-digit deficits. In two of those games, OSU came back to win. The first was vs. Arkansas, when the Cowboys trailed the Razorbacks by 22 points midway through the first period. OSU ended up winning that game by nine. Against Texas Tech in Stillwater, OSU fell behind by as many as 15 points with 12 minutes remaining in the game, but defeated Tech, 64-62. In the other six games, OSU lost by single digits in four of those.
Cowboys In The Polls
Oklahoma State is currently ranked 15th in the ESPN/USA Today Coaches Poll and 16th in the Associated Press poll. The Cowboys dropped in both polls after splitting a pair of game vs. Texas Tech and Fresno State. OSU's No. 5 ranking earlier this season was the highest ranking OSU has achieved since the Cowboys were ranked second nationally in mid-February of 1992. OSU was ranked No. 2 for two weeks before dropping back to eighth that year. Three of Oklahoma State's opponents this season are ranked in the top 25 of at least one poll (Kansas, Oklahoma, Cincinnati), while four more (Missouri, Texas, Texas Tech, Fresno State) are receiving votes in at least one of the polls.
Up Next: Texas and Baylor
Oklahoma State will travel to Austin, Texas, on Wednesday, Feb. 20, as the Cowboys take on the Texas Longhorns (16-8 overall, 7-4 Big 12). Game time is set for 7 p.m. and the game will be televised on Cowboy Sports Properties. On Saturday, Feb. 23, OSU will host the Baylor Bears (14-10, 4-7) in a 3 p.m., ESPN Regional broadcast.
Baker Earns All-District Honor
Cowboy senior Maurice Baker was named to the National Association of Basketball Coaches District 12 first-team, it was announced Tuesday. Baker joins Drew Gooden and Kirk Hinrich of Kansas, Kareem Rush of Missouri and Oklahoma's Hollis Price. The country is broken down into 15 districts, recognizing the best men's collegiate basketball student-athletes in the nation. The 75 players are now eligible for the NABC/Pontiac Division I All-America team, to be announced at the conclusion of the 2001-02 NCAA men's basketball season.
Baker Nearing Top 25 in All-Time Scoring
With 19 points vs. Texas Tech, Maurice Baker surpassed four former Cowboys and moved into 26th place on the career scoring list. He moved past Clayton Carter (939 points), Ed Odom (945), Don Johnson (945) and Eli Johnson (946). He needs 18 points to move past Larry Hawk and into the top 25 all-time. Baker has the second-most points by a Cowboy with just two years at OSU, trailing Director of Basketball Operations Brooks Thompson (996 points in 1993-94) by 43 points.
McFarlin Posting Big Numbers
Oklahoma State sophomore Ivan McFarlin is showing the league what the coaching staff has known all along - he's a prime-time player. Against Nebraska, he set career highs in both points and rebounds with 20 and 17, respectively. It was the most rebounds by a Cowboy since Bryant Reeves had 20 vs. Kansas in 1995. In I-Mac's first season with the Cowboys (he was a partial qualifier last year), he has 14 double-figure scoring games with a season-high of 20 points. He also recorded his first double-double in the second game of the season with 17 points and 10 rebounds vs. Austin Peay. He had back-to-back double-doubles with 10 and 10 vs. Arkansas and 11 and 11 vs. Ball State. He had four-straight double-figure rebounding games through one stint in the season. In the first exhibition game of the season, I-Mac had 20 rebounds, including 10 on each end of the court. He leads the team in steals with 34 and blocked shots with 24. He is second in field-goal percentage in all games and conference-games only, connecting on 61.4 percent of his overall shots.
Victor Williams Showing Leadership Qualities
While fellow starting guard Maurice Baker was hampered by groin injury and now by a sprained ankle, junior Victor Williams stepped up with 18 points vs. Texas. It was his third-straight game with 17 or more points, and he now has 15 double-figure scoring games this season. Vic is second on the team in scoring with a 12.3 ppg average, and is also second on the team in free-throw percentage (.767). He has 91 assists, leading the team, and 54 turnovers, a 1.69 assist-to-turnover ratio. He recorded the first double-double of his career with 12 points and 10 rebounds vs. Fresno State.
J?nz?n Moving Up Scoring Chart
With 19 points vs. Oklahoma, senior forward Fredrik J?nz?n moved up to 18th on the all-time career scoring list. He surpassed both Chianti Roberts and Raymond Crenshaw. J?nz?n currently has 1,141 points in his four-year career, and needs just five points to move past Joe Atkinson for 17th place. At his current pace of 12 points per game, Fred could finish the regular season in the top 15.
J?nz?n Nearing 700 Career Rebounds
Senior forward Fredrik J?nz?n needs just two rebounds to eclipse the 700-rebound plateau. He currently has 698 boards, and is in ninth place on the career rebounding charts. Should he reach the 700-board mark, he would become just the seventh player in school history to record 1,100 points and 700 rebounds in a career.
J?nz?n, Sanders Consistently in the Starting Lineup
Senior Fredrik J?nz?n and junior Melvin Sanders have started 61 and 55 consecutive games, respectively, for OSU, ranking sixth and ninth on the Cowboy consecutive starts list. J?nz?n needs two more to move past Byron Houston (62) in fifth place, while Sanders needs two more to surpass Brett Robisch (56) for eighth on the list.
OSU Post Players Host Block Party
Through the first 25 games, OSU has blocked 92 shots, and average of 3.7 swats a game. Ivan McFarlin leads the team with 29, while Andre Williams has 26. Antoine Broxsie has 15 blocked shots. Fredrik J?nz?n has 10, while Maurice Baker has five. Melvin Sanders has three and Jack Marlow has one. Williams had four vs. Cincinnati, and three vs. Northwestern State, Texas and Texas Tech, while Broxsie had three vs. TCU, New Orleans and Northwestern State. McFarlin had three vs. North Texas, Ball State, Nebraska, Kansas State and Oklahoma.
Andre Williams Fifth on All-Time Blocked Shots Chart
Andre Williams recorded four blocks in the first game of the seeason vs. Cincinnati, and has 26 total this year. He became just the fifth player in school history to reach the century mark in blocked shots in his career. The amazing fact is that he accomplished that feat in just two seasons, the second Cowboy ever to do so. Byron Houston had 131 blocks after his sophomore year. Andre has had six multiple-block games this season, including four vs. Cincinnati and three vs. Northwestern State, Texas and Texas Tech.
