Wednesday's Game
Oklahoma State will host bedlam-rival Oklahoma on Wednesday, Feb. 13, in the second game of the season between these two squads. OSU is 18-6 overall and 5-5 in Big 12 Conference play after a 58-52 loss at the hands of Fresno State Sunday afternoon. OU is 19-3 overall, 8-2 in league play after a 68-64 victory over Texas A&M in College Station Saturday afternoon. It will be the 200th meeting between these two teams on the hardcourt.
Last Time Out For Oklahoma State
Victor Williams recorded his first-career double-double with 12 points and 10 rebounds, but OSU could not contain the three-point shooting of Fresno State as the Bulldogs defeated the Cowboys, 58-52, in non-conference action Sunday afternoon in Fresno. OSU shot just 35 percent and had 25 turnovers in the loss. The Cowboys did handle Fresno State's All-America center Melvin Ely, limiting him to just 11 points, but could not stop the long-range shooting of Damon Jackson and Chris Sandy. The two combined for 10 treys in 16 attempts. OSU outrebounded the Bulldogs, 45-33, but failed to grab two rebounds in the last 20 seconds on missed Fresno State free throws. Ivan McFarlin added 12 points for Oklahoma State on 6-of-9 shooting, and also had three steals.
OSU-OU on Television
Oklahoma State's game Wednesday night vs. Oklahoma will be televised by ESPN Regional as part of the Big 12 Conference's television package. Fred White will call the action while Reid Gettys will provide expert analysis. It will mark OSU's sixth game this season on ESPN Regional.
OSU-OU: The Series
Oklahoma leads the all-time Bedlam series in basketball, 117-82. However, OSU leads the series, 52-40, in Stillwater. The Cowboys have won 14 of the last 25 in the Eddie Sutton Era.
Last Time Out For Oklahoma
Aaron McGhee picked up a double-double with 21 points and 10 rebounds and Quannas White had 12 points and 12 assists as the Oklahoma Sooners defeated the Texas A&M Aggies, 68-64, last Saturday in College Station. OU shot 46.9 percent from the floor and 82.6 percent from the line, but just 3-of-15 from beyond the arc. The Sooners also had just seven turnovers, compared to 12 for A&M.
Comeback Cowboys
OSU has trailed every opponent this season at some point in the game, including eight games where the Cowboys were in double-digit deficits. In two of those games, OSU came back to win. The first was vs. Arkansas, when the Cowboys trailed the Razorbacks by 22 points midway through the first period. OSU ended up winning that game by nine. Against Texas Tech in Stillwater, OSU fell behind by as many as 15 points with 12 minutes remaining in the game, but defeated Tech, 64-62. In the other six games, OSU lost by single digits in four of those.
Cowboys In The Polls
Oklahoma State is currently ranked 15th in the ESPN/USA Today Coaches Poll and 16th in the Associated Press poll. The Cowboys dropped in both polls after splitting a pair of game vs. Texas Tech and Fresno State. OSU's No. 5 ranking earlier this season was the highest ranking OSU has achieved since the Cowboys were ranked second nationally in mid-February of 1992. OSU was ranked No. 2 for two weeks before dropping back to eighth that year. Three of Oklahoma State's opponents this season are ranked in the top 25 of at least one poll (Kansas, Oklahoma, Cincinnati), while four more (Missouri, Texas, Texas Tech, Fresno State) are receiving votes in at least one of the polls.
Up Next: Texas A&M and Texas
OSU will hit the road for two-straight conference games as the Cowboys travel to College Station, Texas, this Saturday for a game with Texas A&M, and next Wednesday to Austin for a contest with Texas. Both games are televised, the A&M game on Fox Sports Net and the UT game on Cowboy Sports Properties.
Baker One of Top Rebounding Guards
Senior guard Maurice Baker is one of the top rebounding guards in the country. In fact, he ranks third nationally in rebounding among players that are 6-2 or shorter, according to information compiled by STATS, Inc.
Baker Nearing Top 25 in All-Time Scoring
With 19 points vs. Texas Tech, Maurice Baker surpassed four former Cowboys and moved into 26th place on the career scoring list. He moved past Clayton Carter (939 points), Ed Odom (945), Don Johnson (945) and Eli Johnson (946). He needs 18 points to move past Larry Hawk and into the top 25 all-time. Baker has the second-most points by a Cowboy with just two years at OSU, trailing Director of Basketball Operations Brooks Thompson (996 points in 1993-94) by 43 points.
McFarlin Posting Big Numbers
Oklahoma State sophomore Ivan McFarlin is showing the league what the coaching staff has known all along - he's a prime-time player. Against Nebraska, he set career highs in both points and rebounds with 20 and 17, respectively. It was the most rebounds by a Cowboy since Bryant Reeves had 20 vs. Kansas in 1995. In I-Mac's first season with the Cowboys (he was a partial qualifier last year), he has 14 double-figure scoring games with a season-high of 20 points. He also recorded his first double-double in the second game of the season with 17 points and 10 rebounds vs. Austin Peay. He had back-to-back double-doubles with 10 and 10 vs. Arkansas and 11 and 11 vs. Ball State. He had four-straight double-figure rebounding games through one stint in the season. In the first exhibition game of the season, I-Mac had 20 rebounds, including 10 on each end of the court. He leads the team in steals with 34 and blocked shots with 24. He is second in field-goal percentage in all games and conference-games only, connecting on 61.4 percent of his overall shots.
Victor Williams Showing Leadership Qualities
While fellow starting guard Maurice Baker was hampered by groin injury and now by a sprained ankle, junior Victor Williams stepped up with 18 points vs. Texas. It was his third-straight game with 17 or more points, and he now has 15 double-figure scoring games this season. Vic is second on the team in scoring with a 12.3 ppg average, and is also second on the team in free-throw percentage (.767). He has 91 assists, leading the team, and 54 turnovers, a 1.69 assist-to-turnover ratio. He recorded the first double-double of his career with 12 points and 10 rebounds vs. Fresno State.
J?nz?n Moving Up Scoring Chart
With 12 points vs. Texas Tech, senior forward Fredrik J?nz?n moved into the top 20 all-time on the career scoring list. He currently has 1,122 points in his four-year career, and needs just eight points to move past Chianti Roberts for 19th place. At his current pace of 11.7 points per game, Fred could finish the regular season in the top 15.
J?nz?n Nearing 700 Career Rebounds
Senior forward Fredrik J?nz?n needs just six rebounds to eclipse the 700-rebound plateau. He currently has 694 boards, and is in ninth place on the career rebounding charts. Should he reach the 700-board mark, he would become just the seventh player in school history to record 1,100 points and 700 rebounds in a career.
J?nz?n, Sanders Consistently in the Starting Lineup
Senior Fredrik J?nz?n and junior Melvin Sanders have started 60 and 54 consecutive games, respectively, for OSU, ranking sixth and ninth on the Cowboy consecutive starts list. J?nz?n needs three more to move past Byron Houston (62) in fifth place, while Sanders needs three more to surpass Brett Robisch (56) for eighth on the list.
OSU Post Players Host Block Party
Through the first 23 games, OSU has blocked 86 shots, and average of 3.7 swats a game. Ivan McFarlin and Andre Williams lead the team with 26, followed by Antoine Broxsie with 15 blocked shots. Fredrik J?nz?n has 10, while Maurice Baker has five. Melvin Sanders has three and Jack Marlow has one. Williams had four vs. Cincinnati, and three vs. Northwestern State, Texas and Texas Tech, while Broxsie had three vs. TCU, New Orleans and Northwestern State. McFarlin had three vs. North Texas, Ball State, Nebraska and Kansas State.
Andre Williams Fifth on All-Time Blocked Shots Chart
Oklahoma State junior Andre Williams recorded four blocks in the first game of the seeason vs. Cincinnati, and has 26 total this year. He became just the fifth player in school history to reach the century mark in blocked shots in his career. The amazing fact is that he accomplished that feat in just two seasons, the second Cowboy ever to do so. Byron Houston had 131 blocks after his sophomore year, and also owns the all-time career blocked-shots record with 223. Andre has had six multiple-block games this season, including four vs. Cincinnati and three vs. Northwestern State, Texas and Texas Tech.
Cowboy Noteworthy
* Oklahoma State has shot over 50 percent six times this season, but none in 2002. All six games came before the New Year. OSU's opponents have shot over 50 percent in just three games this season. However, all three have been in the last eight games.
* OSU has shot over 70 percent from the free-throw line just once in the last nine games (5-of-7 or 71.4 percent vs. Fresno State). The last time OSU shot better than 70 percent with at least 10 attempts was on Dec. 22 vs. Arkansas, a span of 12 games.
* In the last six games, OSU is shooting just 23.4 percent (25-of-107) from beyond the three-point arc.
