Saturday's Game
Oklahoma State will travel to Manhattan, Kan., this weekend to do battle with the Kansas State Wildcats. Game time on Saturday is set for 12:45 p.m. OSU is 17-4 overall and 4-4 in the Big 12 after a 58-53 loss to the Oklahoma Sooners on Wednesday in Norman. KSU is 8-10 overall, 2-5 in league play after a 71-70 victory over the Texas Longhorns Wednesday in Manhattan.
Last Time Out For Oklahoma State
Oklahoma State went on a 30-17 run to open the second period to overcome a 12-point halftime deficit, but Oklahoma defeated the Cowboys, 58-53, in the Lloyd Noble Center. OSU trailed by two with 31 seconds to play, and OU's Ebi Ere miss the front end of a one-and-one. However, Aaron McGhee grabbed the rebound and made two free throws after being fouled. The Cowboys missed two free throws and a three pointer in the waning minutes to pick up the loss. Cheyne Gadson had 14 points, a season high, on 6-of-7 shooting off the bench to lead OSU while Victor Williams added 12. The Cowboys' senior duo of Maurice Baker and Fredrik J?nz?n went a combined 5-of-20 from the floor. Hollis Price had 17 points for the Sooners, while McGhee finished with 10 points and 11 rebounds. OSU shot just 56.5 percent from the free-throw line.
OSU-KSU on Television
Saturday's game with Kansas State will be produced by ESPN Regional, part of the Big 12 Conference's television package. John Walters will handle the play-by-play duties, while Chris Piper will provide expert analysis.
OSU-KSU: The Series
Kansas State leads the all-time series with Oklahoma State, 67-40, including a 31-12 mark in Manhattan. The Cowboys have won the last five meetings, including the last two in Bramlage Coliseum. OSU is 16-4 vs. K-State in the Eddie Sutton Era.
Last Time Out For Kansas State
Kansas State had four players score in double figures, offsetting a 20-point performance by Texas' James Thomas, as the Wildcats defeated the Longhorns, 71-70. The score was tied at halftime, 31-31, and KSU shot 53.8 percent from the floor in the second period. Larry Reid scored 17 points to lead K-State, while Phineas Atchison added 15 off the bench. Kansas State got a total of 15 points off the bench, compared to just 10 for Texas.
Up Next: Texas Tech and Fresno State
On Wednesday, Feb. 6, the Cowboys will host the Texas Tech Red Raiders (15-4, 4-3) and attempt to avenge an earlier loss to TTU in Lubbock. Game time is set for 7 p.m. OSU will then take a break from conference action as the Cowboys travel to Fresno, Calif., to face the Fresno State Bulldogs (14-7) on Sunday, Feb. 10, at 2:30 p.m. The game will be televised by ABC.
Last Time vs. Kansas State
Fredrik J?nz?n hit a jump shot and two free throws in the final 36 seconds and Oklahoma State survived a season-worst 32 percent shooting to beat Kansas State, 52-47, last season in Stillwater. The Cowboys made just six field goals in the second half and finished 16-of-50 from the field. Kansas State lost for the ninth time in 10 games. J?nz?n had 17 points and eight rebounds. His biggest rebound came with 12.1 seconds remaining, when he grabbed the ball after Phineas Atchison missed a leaner in the lane. J?nz?n was fouled and made both free throws for a 50-47 lead. He had given the Cowboys a 48-47 advantage with 36 seconds remaining by hitting a baseline jumper that rattled around and in. Kansas State scored just three points in the final 4:45 of the first half, then started the second half by going scoreless for nearly 7-1/2 minutes. But the Wildcats only trailed 35-29 because Oklahoma State was struggling as well. An Atchison three pointer gave Kansas State a 43-42 lead with 6:45 left. His jumper with 4:20 left tied the game at 45, but it proved to be the Wildcats' final basket. Two free throws by Kelvin Howell with 54.8 seconds left gave Kansas State its final lead, 47-46. J?nz?n followed with his jump shot and free throws. Larry Reid missed a long three-point try with two seconds remaining and Victor Williams sank two free throws for the final margin. Williams had 13 points, and Maurice Baker had 11 points and six rebounds. Howell, Atchison and Richie Terry scored 10 each for Kansas State. The Cowboys, who averaged 16.7 turnovers per game, had 13 in the first half. Eight of them - including turnovers on five-straight possessions - came during an eight-minute stretch when Kansas State outscored the Cowboys 15-3 to take a 21-16 lead. The Wildcats led by as many as eight late the first half before Oklahoma State scored 10-straight points to retake the lead.
Cowboy Noteworthy
* If sophomore Ivan McFarlin was able to play 40 minutes per game, his numbers would average out to 18.3 points and 12.8 rebounds per game. He is averaging nine shot attempts in OSU's four conference wins and just three attempts in the Cowboys' four conference losses.
* Over the last three games, OSU's newcomer duo of Ivan McFarlin and Cheyne Gadson are shooting 23-of-37 (.622 percent) from the floor. The rest of the team is shooting 33.8 percent.
McFarlin Earns Conference Honor
Sophomore Ivan McFarlin was named the Phillips 66 Big 12 Rookie of the Week in voting done by a media panel for the week ending Jan. 27. McFarlin averaged 16 points and 12.5 rebounds in two conference wins last week for OSU. The 6-8 forward opened the week registering career highs in points (20) and rebounds (17) in the 70-63 victory over Nebraska. The 17 boards were the most by a Cowboy since All-American Bryant Reeves pulled down 20 rebounds against Kansas in 1995. McFarlin, a native of Missouri City, Texas, had three blocked shots vs. the Huskers, his sixth multiple-block game of the season. In the 64-55 win over Colorado, McFarlin made 6-of-8 shots and scored 12 points. He also had eight rebounds against the Buffs.
Cowboys In The Polls
Oklahoma State is currently ranked ninth in both the Associated Press poll and the ESPN/USA Today Coaches Poll. The Cowboys moved up two spots after defeating Nebraska and Colorado last week. OSU's No. 5 ranking earlier this season was the highest ranking OSU has achieved since the Cowboys were ranked second nationally in mid-February of 1992. OSU was ranked No. 2 for two weeks before dropping back to eighth that year. Five of Oklahoma State's opponents this season are ranked in the top 25 of at least one poll (Kansas, Oklahoma, Cincinnati, Missouri and Texas), while two more (Texas Tech, Ball State) are receiving votes in at least one of the polls.
Baker Ranks in Top 30 All-Time
With six points vs. Oklahoma, Maurice Baker now has 918 points in his career at OSU. He surpassed James King for 30th on the OSU career scoring list, making him just the third player in the top 30 with just two years in a Cowboy uniform, joining current Director of Basketball Operations Brooks Thompson (996 points in 1993-94) and Ed Odom (945 points in 1979-80).
J?nz?n, Sanders Consistently in the Starting Lineup
Senior Fredrik J?nz?n and junior Melvin Sanders have started 57 and 51 consecutive games, respectively, for OSU ranking seventh and ninth on the Cowboy consecutive starts list. J?nz?n needs three more to move past Raymond Crewshaw (59) for fifth, while Sanders needs six more to surpass Brett Robisch (56) for eighth on the list.
McFarlin Posting Big Numbers
Oklahoma State sophomore Ivan McFarlin is showing the league what the coaching staff has known all along - he's a prime-time player. Against Nebraska, he set career highs in both points and rebounds with 20 and 17, respectively. It was the most rebounds by a Cowboy since Bryant Reeves had 20 vs. Kansas in 1995. In I-Mac's first season with the Cowboys (he was a partial qualifier last year), he has 13 double-figure scoring games with a season-high of 20 points. He also recorded his first double-double in the second game of the season with 17 points and 10 rebounds vs. Austin Peay. He had back-to-back double-doubles with 10 and 10 vs. Arkansas and 11 and 11 vs. Ball State. He had four-straight double-figure rebounding games through one stint in the season. In the first exhibition game of the season, I-Mac had 20 rebounds, including 10 on each end of the court. He leads the team in steals with 32 and is also second on the team with his 20 blocked shots. He is third in the Big 12 Conference in field-goal shooting, connecting on 60.1 percent of his shots.
Victor Williams Showing Leadership Qualities
While fellow starting guard Maurice Baker was hampered by injury, junior Victor Williams stepped up with 18 points vs. Texas. It was his third-straight game with 17 or more points, and he now has 15 double-figure scoring games this season. Vic is second on the team in scoring with a 12.3 ppg average, and is also second on the team in free-throw percentage (.793). He has 77 assists, second on the team, and 42 turnovers, a 1.83 assist-to-turnover ratio.
J?nz?n Moving Up Scoring Chart
With 13 points vs. Ball State, senior center Fredrik J?nz?n became just the 23rd player in school history to record 1,000 points in their career. He now has 1,098 points, ranking 21st on the OSU career scoring list. Fred is now 15 points from surpassing Richard Dumas and moving into the top 20 all-time. Dumas had 1,112 from 1988-90.
J?nz?n Nearing 700 Career Rebounds
Senior center Fredrik J?nz?n moved into ninth-place on the career rebounding chart with his seven boards vs. Northwestern State. He now has 675 in his four years at OSU. He is just the 10th player in school history to record 600 boards in a career. With his 1,098 points, he is the eighth player in school history to record 1,000 points and 600 rebounds in a career.
OSU Post Players Host Block Party
Through the first 21 games, OSU has blocked 75 shots, and average of 3.6 swats a game. Andre Williams leads the team with 22, followed by Ivan McFarlin with 21 and Antoine Broxsie with 15 blocked shots. Fredrik J?nz?n has eight, while Maurice Baker has five. Melvin Sanders has two and Jack Marlow has one. Williams had four vs. Cincinnati, three vs. Northwestern State and three more vs. Texas, while Broxsie had three vs. TCU, New Orleans and Northwestern State. McFarlin had three vs. North Texas, Ball State and Nebraska.
Andre Williams Fifth on All-Time Blocked Shots Chart
Oklahoma State junior Andre Williams recorded four blocks in the first game of the seeason vs. Cincinnati, and has 22 total this year. He became just the fifth player in school history to reach the century mark in blocked shots in his career. The amazing fact is that he accomplished that feat in just two seasons, the second Cowboy ever to do so. Byron Houston had 131 blocks after his sophomore year, and also owns the all-time career blocked-shots record with 223. Andre has had six multiple-block games this season, including three vs. Northwestern State and Texas.
Sutton First Member of 250-250 Club
After some dilligent research by Gary Johnson at the NCAA, it has been determined that Coach Eddie Sutton is the first coach in NCAA history to win 250 games at two different Division I schools. Coach Sutton picked up 260 wins while at Arkansas, and currently has 266 at Oklahoma State. Connecticut's Jim Calhoun had 349 wins entering the season at UConn, and had 248 victories at Northeastern. Lou Henson of New Mexico State had 423 wins at Illinois and has 232 prior to this season at NMSU.
OSU in the Big 12 Statistics
Oklahoma State ranks in the top-four of the league in several statistical categories. The Cowboys are first in scoring defense at 62.5 points per game and also in three-point field goal percentage defense at 28.1 percent. The Cowboys are tied for first in field-goal percentage defense at 40.0 percent. OSU is third in scoring margin (plus 11.6 per game) and third in rebounding defense (33 boards given up per contest). OSU is third in rebounding margin (plus 7.8 rebounds per game) and offensive rebounds (15.14).
Head Coach Eddie Sutton
Coach Eddie Sutton is in his 12th season at Oklahoma State and his 32nd season overall. He brings with him an all-time record of 696-273, including a 266-109 mark at OSU. He currently ranks as the 14th-winningest coach in NCAA Division I history, and is the sixth-winningest active coach in the Division I ranks. He returned to his alma mater in 1990, and has since brought the Cowboys back to basketball prominence. He has four times taken the Pokes to the Sweet 16 of the NCAA Tournament, and twice gone to the Elite Eight. In 1995, he guided the Cowboys to the Final Four and a No. 4 national ranking according to the Coaches' Poll. OSU has finished in the top three of the conference on seven occasions since his return, and has finished in the top five in all but one of his OSU seasons. He is a four-time National Coach of the Year, and was the first coach in NCAA history to lead four different schools to the Big Dance. Only two coaches rank higher in both winning percentage and victories for active coaches that Coach Sutton. Only Dean Smith won more games in his first 30 years as a head coach than Coach Sutton.
