STILLWATER, Okla. - Oklahoma State's women's basketball team has added four players during the fall signing period it was announced today. Guards Kenzie Cole and Brittany Dietz, post player Christian Hood and forward Destanie Sykes signed National Letters of Intent and will join the Cowgirls for the 2003-04 season.
"We are very excited about our recruiting class. We feel we found a post player that can step in and make an immediate impact, a couple of shooters that can come in and fill that void and a very intelligent wing player that has a winning attitude," Cowgirl Head Coach Julie Goodenough said.
"We feel like we signed kids our fans will fall in love with and be proud of. They are fun to watch, are great kids and will represent Oklahoma State University well."
Cole, a 5-8 product of Brock (Texas) High School, has led BHS to state titles the past three seasons, earning MVP honors at last year's state tournament. A three-time all-state selection, she earned first-team all-region and district MVP honors last season after averaging 14 points, five rebounds and seven assists per game.
"Kenzie is one of my favorite players to come from the state of Texas. She is tough as nails and they don't make them any more competitive than her," Goodenough said. "I look forward to the intangibles that she will bring to the table."
Dietz, OSU's lone junior college signee, hails from Osborne, Kansas and is coming off a record-breaking freshman campaign at Hutchinson Community College. The 5-6 guard's 117 made three-point shots led the nation and shattered the school's single season, helping her earn all-region and first-team All-Jayhawk Conference honors.
Dietz led Osborne High to a state title as a junior and a runner-up finish during her senior season. The all-state selection was also a standout on the tennis court, finishing her prep career without losing a single set en route to a 149-0 career record and four individual state titles.
"Brittany will fill a void we have because she is a pure shooter. She is a winner in everything she does and has a great desire to be successful," Goodenough said.
Hood, a 6-5 native of Hutchinson, Kan., was her squad's second-leading scorer last season, averaging 12.6 points per game as well as a team-high 7.3 rebounds. Last year, she was a second-team All-Reno County pick and earned honorable mention all-state honors as well. The highly recruited Hood is also a standout on the Hutchinson High track and volleyball squads.
"With Christian, it is exciting to land such a high-profile player. It is players like Christian that will help us turn the corner with our program," Goodenough said. "We like her athleticism and her ability to run the floor."
Sykes, a 6-0 product of Duncanville (Texas) High School, helped lead the Pantherettes to an overall record of 61-9 over the past two seasons. She averaged 11.4 points and 5.1 rebounds per game last season on her way to being named an all-district selection. As a junior Sykes was named the district's defensive player of the year after being tabbed as its newcomer of the year following her sophomore season.
"Destanie comes from a perennial powerhouse at Duncanville High School," Goodenough said. "She is the type of young lady that makes good decisions on the court and is a super team player."
