COWGIRLS PREPARE TO HOST NO. 12 TEXAS
Oklahoma State's Cowgirl basketball team (9-7 overall, 1-2 Big 12) will
play the third of its five consecutive games against nationally-ranked
opponents when the No. 12 Texas Longhorns come to Stillwater for a 7 p.m.
tip-off on Wednesday at Gallagher-Iba Arena.
OSU will be looking to snap a two-game losing streak after back-to-back road losses against Oklahoma and Colorado. UT comes to town sporting a 12-2 mark overall and a 4-0 Big 12 record. The Horns have won five straight, including three wins against top-25 competition.
Texas is led by Stacy Stephens, who is hitting at a 57-percent clip from the field. The sophomore center has stepped up her play against conference opponents, averaging 18.8 points per outing to bump her overall average up to 14.5 points per game.
The Longhorns lead the all-time series against the Cowgirls 10-3. OSU's last win versus Texas came on Jan. 12, 2000 in Stillwater (71-69). The Cowgirls also swept the season series against their South Division rivals in 1998.
LAST TIME OUT
Oklahoma State lost its second consecutive game to a nationally-ranked
opponent on the road, suffering a 79-57 defeat at the hands of the Colorado
Buffaloes. Paced by senior guard Mandy Nightingale, who drained four
three-point buckets and finished with 16 points, the Buffs picked up their
first conference win of the season in four tries. OSU's Trisha Skibbe scored
the squad's first 13 points, finishing the contest with 24 points and 11
rebounds. The double-double was the third of the season for the Oxford,
Kan., native. Thia Willis made the most of her first career start, chipping
in with 11 points and three rebounds. The junior from Midwest City, Okla.,
hit 3-of-5 attempts from beyond the arc and scored all of her points in the
second half.
COMING UP
The Cowgirls will continue their homestand against upstart Kansas State on
Saturday at 7 p.m. After being picked to finish seventh in the preseason Big
12 polls, the Wildcats (16-1, 4-0) have vaulted to the top of the Big 12.
K-State has reeled off 13 consecutive wins and checks in at Nos. 9 and 15 in
the the national rankings. The Cowgirls lead the all-time series against the
Wildcats 24-21 after posting a 69-55 win last season in Manhattan. KSU won
the last meeting between the two schools in Stillwater, a 71-64 win on Feb. 9, 2000.
