STANFORD, Ca. - Oklahoma State's men's tennis team notched a pair of upsets en route to picking up a 4-1 win over Florida on Saturday morning in the first round of the NCAA Men's Tennis Team Championships being held at Stanford's Taube Family Tennis Stadium.
"This was a really tight match," Cowboy head coach James Wadley said. "One or two shots could have changed the outcome of the match. This was much closer than the 4-1 score."
The 39th-ranked Cowboys (14-8 overall) were fueled by Chris Bates' three-set victory over Jeremy Wurtzman, who checked in at No. 62 in the rankings, at No. 2 singles. OSU's lone senior came through in doubles action as well, teaming with Fran Krepelka at No. 1 doubles to drop the nation's 23rd-ranked doubles tandem of Nathan Overholser and Wurtzman.
After being down 5-3 in the tiebreaker, the OSU duo reeled off four consecutive points to record a 9-8 victory and propel the Cowboys to the first team point of the contest.
"Chris Bates really came through for us," Wadley added. "He came through with the service break in the doubles tiebreaker, and then came back in singles against one of their strongest players. He hurt his back a little bit in singles, but still managed to come back and win."
Eru Lyndon and Matt Prentice zipped to an 8-3 decision over Matt Behrmann and Ross Greenstein at the No. 2 doubles slot to post OSU's first win of the day.
In addition to Bates' singles win, the Cowboys tallied straight-set wins by Krepelka at No. 4 and Jiri Jezek at the No. 5 position.
Jezek recorded a 6-4, 6-2 decision to claim his 14th win of the season, while Krepelka battled through a pair of tiebreakers to earn a 7-6(7), 7-6(5) win and send the Cowboys into the second round against the winner of Pacific and Stanford on Sunday at 12 p.m.
