OSU TO COMPETE IN BIG 12 CHAMPIONSHIPS
Oklahoma State's Cowgirl Golf team will travel to Rhodes, Iowa, next week to compete in the Big 12 Women's Golf Championships, Monday through Wednesday, on the Harvester Golf Course. OSU finished second at last year's event, one stroke behind Oklahoma. The Cowgirls won the title in 1999, their 15th conference championship since the inauguration of the Big Eight in 1976. Oklahoma State has finished in the top two at the league championship 21 times in 25 tournaments, and the top three in 24-of-25. OSU's only finish outside the top three was the first year of the Big 12 Tournament, when the Cowgirls finished fifth.
OKLAHOMA STATE VS. THE FIELD
Oklahoma State is 30-5 this season in head-to-head battles vs. the Big 12 Conference opponents this season. Four of those five losses came in the first tournament of the season, when the Cowgirls finished 12th at the Dick McGuire Invitational. Since that tournament, OSU is 30-1 vs. the Big 12.
BODEN CLOSING OUT DOMINATING CAREER
For the third-straight year, senior Maria Bod?n sits atop the Big 12 Conference's leaderboard with a 73.85 strokes-per-round average. The 5-5 linkster from Holmsund, Sweden, has had an amazing career at Oklahoma State. In 43 tournaments in her four-year stint at OSU, she has won seven tournaments, finished in the top five on 18 occasions, the top 10 in 27 tournaments and the top 20 on 35 occasions. She is a two-time league Golfer of the Year, and was the Big 12 Newcomer of the Year her freshman season. Her career stroke average of 74.39 is the best-ever at Oklahoma State by nearly two strokes over Eva Dahllof, a three-time All-American. Bod?n is a two-time All-American herself, second-team honors in 1999 and first-team accolades in 2000.
THE SWEDES HAVE IT
Three of Oklahoma State's golfers are natives of Sweden, and all three rank in the top 10 of the Big 12's top individuals. Senior Maria Bod?n leads the league in stroke average at 73.85 strokes per round, while sophomore Linda Wessberg is fifth with a 75.07 stroke average. Junior Emma Zackrisson is ninth with 75.41 strokes per round.
COWGIRLS WIN BIG 12 FALL PREVIEW
Oklahoma State's Cowgirl golf team held off a late run by the Missouri Tigers and won the Big 12 Fall Preview by four strokes last fall at the Ridgewood Country Club. Senior Maria Bod?n finished third with a three-round total of 219, while sophomore Christi Cano tied for seventh individually with a 224. The Cowgirls, with a three-stroke lead over Oklahoma after the first two rounds, shot a 299 during the final stanza. Missouri, 11 strokes behind OSU after two, shot a tournament-best 292 in the final round to finish second. Oklahoma and Texas tied for third, with Baylor finishing fifth. OSU had four golfers finish in the top 20. Sophomore Linda Wessberg tied for 12th with a three-round total of 225, while junior Emma Zackrisson tied for 16th with a 227. Sophomore JoAnn Heller finished tied for 58th with a 247. Complete results of the tournament can be found later in this release.
FIVE NAMED ACADEMIC ALL-BIG 12
All five starters on Oklahoma State's squad have been named Academic All-Big 12, this season, including three first-team members. Senior Maria Bod?n (4.00 grade point average), junior Emma Zackrisson (3.86 GPA) and sophomore JoAnn Heller (3.33 GPA) were all named to the first team, while sophomores Linda Wessberg (3.09 GPA) and Christi Cano (3.05 GPA) were both named honorable mention. It was Bod?n's third honor and Zackrisson's second. Heller, Wessberg and Cano were all first-time honorees.
WEEKS SUSTAINS GOLF SUCCESS
Coach Amy Weeks, in her first year at the helm of the Cowgirl Golf program, has sustained the success that Ann Pitts built at Oklahoma State. This season, Oklahoma State won three tournaments, and finished in the top five on three more occasions. Those three tournament victories ties for the fifth-most in a single-season in the program's 25-year history.
