Oklahoma State's 43rd-ranked men's tennis team won two-of-three doubles matches and three-of-six singles matches en route to a 4-3 victory over No. 49 Tulsa at the DeBois Tennis Center on Tuesday.
The Cowboys notched the first team point when senior Chris Bates and junior Fran Krepelka pounded Alejandro Tejerina and Pawel Sebastyanski, 8-1, at the No. 2 spot, while sophomore Jiri Jezek and sophomore Eru Lyndon defeated Steve Timperley and Micah Zomer, 8-6, at the No. 3 position.
Tulsa tied the score at 1-1 when Zomer defeated Zafiris, 6-3, 6-2, at the No. 6 spot, but OSU bounced back and regained the lead when Jezek defeated Monk, 6-2, 6-4, at the No. 5 spot.
Tulsa then took the lead at 3-2 when Dane McGregor defeated junior Matt Prentice, 4-6, 6-0, 6-3, at the No. 1 spot, and Shriranga Sudhaker defeated Eru Lyndon, 5-7, 6-2, 6-3, at the No. 3 position.
OSU tied the score at 3-3 when Krepelka outlasted Tejerina in three sets, 6-2, 1-6, 7-6, at the No. 4 spot. With the win, Krepelka improved his record to a team-best 13-3.
With the score tied at 3, it was up to the lone senior on the team, Chris Bates. Bates and Sebastyanski battled it out at the No. 2 spot, with each winning a set. Sebastyanski won the first set 7-6, while Bates was down 5-2 in the second set only to storm back to take the second set 7-6.
"It was a real team effort," Bates said. "It was in the script for me to win it and for us to win it."
With the third set determining the match, and ultimately the dual, Bates shone when it counted. Bates defeated Sebastyanski, who beat the 4th-ranked player in the nation last week, 6-3 to clinch the win for the Cowboys.
"I am still in shock. It was best game of doubles and singles I have ever played at OSU," Bates said. "I am very proud of the way Fran (Krepelka) came through. He left it open for me to play my game."
The Cowboys will return to action when they travel to Boulder, Colo., on April 22 to take on the Colorado Buffaloes.
