ST. GEORGE, Utah -- Oklahoma State senior Sarah Knife Chief scattered six hits and threw a complete-game shutout as the Cowgirl softball team defeated the Cal-Santa Barbara Gauchos, 2-0, here Sunday morning in the final game of the Red Desert Classic. OSU finished with a 4-1 record in the tournament, and improved its overall record to 10-7.
Oklahoma State struck early for the only runs of the game. With one out, Jenny Kipp doubled to the fence. Amanda Hayes followed that with a home run to dead center, her second of the season. It also increased her team-leading RBI total to 16.
Knife Chief and the Cowgirl defense worked out of several jams. The Gauchos had a runner on third base in four of the seven innings, but could not get them across home plate.
Oklahoma State will travel to Tampa, Fla., next weekend to compete in the Speedline Invitational, hosted by the University of South Florida.
