Stillwater, Okla. - Oklahoma State's Kara Faulk recorded her seventh double-double of the season and the Cowgirls visited the free-throw line 37 times as OSU defeated UNLV, 71-67, here Sunday afternoon in second-round action of the Women's National Invitation Tournament.
Faulk scored a game-high 20 points and pulled down 11 rebounds in the win. Freshman Trisha Skibbe scored 11 points for OSU and sophomore Chantoya Hawkins chipped in 10.
Oklahoma State led by as many as 11 points in the first half on three occasions, the last at 30-19 with 3:24 remaining in the period. UNLV would not cooperate, however, as the Lady Rebels cut the lead to five after a 6-0 run. Faulk hit a long jumper with 1:13 remaining to take the lead back up to seven, and OSU entered the lockerroom ahead, 36-27, after Dayna Gambill fouled Hawkins two seconds before the half and subsequently was given a technical foul.
The Cowgirls went on a 10-4 run to open the second half and took a 15-point lead, their biggest of the game. A short jumper by Skibbe with 15:05 to go put OSU ahead, 48-33.
UNLV started hacking away at the deficit, cutting it to five on two occasions before a layup by Linda Frohlich cut the lead to three at 58-55 with 6:20 remaining. Gambill cut the lead to two a 1-1/2 later, and the Lady Rebels got to within two once more at the 1:27 mark, but two missed shots with 18 seconds remaining and two Faulk free throws sealed the win.
"We have been in that situation several times this year," responded Faulk, when asked about the close win. "We have a comfortable lead and let a team get back into it. I think this past season's experience kind of helped us out a little bit."
Oklahoma State (16-14) will play the winner of the Hawaii-BYU game that is being played Monday night at 11 p.m. CST in Honolulu, Hawaii. The date and site of the Cowgirls' next contest will be determined after that game.
