COWGIRLS HOST NO. 10 OKLAHOMA SOONERS
Oklahoma State (12-9 overall, 4-6 Big 12) will play against its second top-10 team in a row as the Cowgirls host the Oklahoma Sooners (18-4, 9-1) in the first round of Bedlam basketball this season. OU is ranked 10th in the latest edition of the Associated Press poll, and 11th in the most recent USA Today/ESPN Coaches Poll. OSU is coming off an 83-54 loss at the hands of the ninth-ranked Iowa State Cyclones Wednesday night in Ames, Iowa, while Oklahoma is fresh off an 84-62 victory over the Nebraska Huskers in Lincoln, Neb. The game will be televised by Cox Communications as part of the Learfield Sports Properties package. Mick Cornett will do play-by-play, while Laura Reece-Davis will provide color analysis.
COMING UP
Oklahoma State will travel to College Station, Texas, for a Tuesday game with the Texas A&M Lady Aggies (12-9, 2-8). Game time is set for 7 p.m. On Saturday, Feb. 17, the Cowgirls will host a doubleheader with the men's team as OSU hosts Texas in men's action at 12:45 p.m. and the Lady ?Horns at 7 p.m. On Wednesday, Feb. 21, the Cowgirls will play the Missouri Tigers in Columbia, Mo., at 7 p.m.
LAST TIME OUT
Iowa State's seventh-ranked women's basketball team poured in 12 three pointers en route to an 83-54 win over the Oklahoma State Cowgirls here Wednesday evening in front of 9,407 fans in Hilton Coliseum. Five different Cyclones made a trey in the victory. OSU freshman Trisha Skibbe scored 11 points for the Cowgirls, the only double-figure scoring in the game for Oklahoma State. ISU, meanwhile, had four starters in double figures, led by Lindsey Wilson's 22. Megan Taylor scored 14, Tracy Gahan 13 and Angie Welle added 12 for Iowa State. Oklahoma State never led in the game as ISU went on a 7-0 run to start the game. OSU trailed, 39-23, at halftime. Iowa State extended its lead to as many as 32 in the second period before both teams emptied their respective benches. The Cowgirls shot just 33.9 percent for the game, and 36.4 percent from behind the arc. Iowa State, meanwhile, shot 41.8 percent from the floor and connected on 15-of-19 free throws. Oklahoma State had 19 turnovers in the game, although 12 of those came in the first period. The loss broke the Cowgirls' three-game winning streak.
FAULK NAMED BIG 12 PLAYER OF THE WEEK
For the first time this season, a Cowgirl was named the Big 12 Conference's Player of the Week. Kara Faulk, a junior from Sapulpa, Okla., earned the honor for the week ending Feb. 4. For the week, she averaged 21 points and 10.5 rebounds in two wins for the Cowgirls. She also shot 48.3 percent from the floor and 84.6 percent from the free-throw line. She connected on 3-of-8 shots from behind the arc.
MORE ON OKLAHOMA
Oklahoma is 18-4 overall this season and 8-1 in Big 12 Conference action. The Sooners are ranked 10th in the Associated Press poll and 11th in the latest USA Today/ESPN Coaches Poll. OU sits atop the Big 12 standings in a three-way tie with Iowa State and Texas Tech. Oklahoma is led by guard LaNeishea Caufield, who is averaging 17.6 points and 4.5 rebounds per game. Also scoring in double figures for the Sooners is guard Stacey Dales, who is averaging 16.2 points, 4.6 rebounds and 7.4 assists per contest, and forward Caton Hill, who is averaging 12.6 points and 8.8 rebounds per game. Center Jennifer Cunningham, who started 15 games for OU and the first seven conference contests, is out with a knee injury. The head coach for the Sooners is Sheri Coale, in her fifth season with OU. She has an all-time record of 71-67, although over the last 1-1/2 seasons, she is 43-12.
OSU-OU SERIES
Oklahoma State leads the all-time series with Oklahoma, 34-30, including a 16-11 edge in games played in Stillwater. OU has won the last two meetings, both last season, and won both regular-season games in 1999. The only break in that streak was a 70-66 win for the Cowgirls at the Big 12 Tournament in ?99. OSU had won six straight before the recent skid.
WHO'S HOT
#12 Jessica Bates - Jessica has scored in double figures in three of the last four games. She had a double-double vs. Wichita State with 23 points and 10 rebounds, both season highs. She is shooting 60.6 percent in the last four contests.
#20 Shelby Hutchens - Shelby has seven double-figure scoring games this season, including the two of the last three. She was named to the all-tournament team of the Islander Classic, and had a career-high nine assists vs. Eastern Michigan in the Bahamas.
#21 Mandy Stuber - After playing sparingly in nine games this season, Mandy went off vs. Texas A&M, scoring a career-high 16 points on 6-of-7 shooting, including 4-of-4 from three-point range.
#22 Kara Faulk - Kara averaged a double-double in three games vs. Texas A&M, Baylor and K-State, with 18.3 points and 10.7 rebounds. She was named the MVP of the Nassau Sunsplash Shootout after she scored a career-high 24 points vs. Alabama. She tied that high against Baylor.
#32 Chantoya Hawkins - Chantoya has six double-figure scoring games this season, including two in the last four games. She had a season-high eight assists vs. Texas A&M, and was named to the all-tournament team of the Islander Classic.
MISCELLANEOUS NOTES
- Oklahoma State scored a season-high 95 points vs. West Virginia, the most for the Cowgirls since a 95-point performance vs. Texas A&M in Stillwater on Feb. 11, 1998.
- OSU's 51.6 percent shooting vs. Texas A&M on Jan. 27 was a season high. It was also the highest since the Cowgirls shot 54.3 percent vs. the Aggies in Stillwater last season (Feb. 19).
- The Cowgirls had a season-high six blocked shots vs. Baylor last week, the most since OSU had six vs. Colorado last season in Boulder. Mandy Stuber led the Cowgirls with three, while Shelby Hutchens had a key block of a Sheila Lambert shot attempt at the buzzer to insure the win.
- Kara Faulk is just six points shy of the 500-point milestone. She has twice scored 24 points in a game this season, a career best.
- Chantoya Hawkins is just 20 points shy of the 500-point plateau. She has 480 points in hertwo-year career.
- OSU has limited its opponents to less than 60 points on seven occasions, and is 7-0 in those games. The Cowgirls have give up 70 or more points in just four games this year.
- Although most members of the team would rather forget the 29-point performance vs. Texas Tech in Lubbock, it seems to have done some good. Prior to that contest, OSU was averaging 62.8 points per game. In the next three games after that debacle, the Cowgirls averaged 74.3 points per contest.
COWGIRLS IN THE RPI
Oklahoma State is ranked 39th in the Ratings Percentage Index published by College Basketball News on Feb. 8. The Cowgirls' schedule-strength rank (17th) is the third-toughest in the league behind Nebraska (seventh) and Oklahoma (10th).
COACH DICK HALTERMAN
Dick Halterman is entering his 18th season as the head coach for the Oklahoma State Cowgirls, and brings with him a 313-212 career mark at OSU. Halterman has guided the Cowgirls to eight postseason appearances in the last 12 years, including seven NCAA Tournament appearances (last in 1996) and one Women's NIT appearance (1998). Under Halterman, 13 Cowgirls have been named first-team all-conference, while 31 student-athletes have achieved first-team academic all-conference status. He is a two-time conference Coach of the Year, and was the District V Coach of the Year in 1991. Halterman has taken two conference All-Star teams abroad, including August of 1999, when he led the Big 12 All-Stars on a tour of Finland and Sweden. That team finished with a 5-1 record. COWGIRL BASKETBALL ON THE AIR
Once again during the 2000-01 season, Oklahoma State's basketball games will be broadcast live on KGFY-105.5 FM in Stillwater. Kevin Gum, in his 11th season with the Cowgirl broadcast, will handle play-by-play duties, while Casey Kendrick, in his sixth season on the air, will provide color analysis. For the first time, Cowgirl Basketball will be part of the OSU Radio Network. Member stations will provide statewide broadcasts of as many as 10 games throughout the season. Fans unable to pick up the over-the-air broadcast will be able to listen to the games via the internet at www.okstate.com. Broadcasts will begin 15 minutes prior to tipoff with pregame analysis, as well as interviews with Coach Halterman and various Cowgirl players.
