COWGIRLS HOST HUSKERS ON SENIOR NIGHT
Oklahoma State (13-13 overall, 5-10 Big 12) will host the Nebraska Huskers (12-16, 4-11) in the final game of the regular season Wednesday night at 8:30 p.m. in Gallagher-Iba Arena. It will also be Senior Night, as three Cowgirls will be honored for their contributions to the program over the last four or five seasons. The game will be played as part of a doubleheader with the Cowboys' game vs. Baylor starting at 6 p.m.
COMING UP
The Big 12 Tournament begins next Tuesday, March 5, at noon in Municipal Auditorium in Kansas City, Mo. Oklahoma State will open the tournament for the third time in the five years of the Big 12's existence in that first game of the tournament (No. 8 seed vs. No. 9 seed). The Cowgirls' opponent will be either Nebraska (if Kansas loses at Texas A&M) or Kansas (with an OSU win and a KU win). If OSU loses and Kanas wins, OSU will play Nebraska. The winner of that game will play regular-season champion Oklahoma in the second round on Wednesday, March 6, at noon.
LAST TIME OUT
(AP) Despite a career game by Chantoya Hawkins, Oklahoma State fell to the eighth-ranked Oklahoma Sooners, 88-83, in overtime Saturday night. Hawkins almost spoiled Senior Night for the Sooners, who won their first conference title since winning the Big Eight in 1985-86. Hawkins, who was celebrating her 20th birthday, connected on five treys and scored a career-high 26 points in leading an Oklahoma State comeback that fell just a few points short. The Sooners were sluggish at the beginning, but used a 15-2 run to take an 11-point lead with just over five minutes left in the first half. Oklahoma's Stacey Dales scored seven points during that stretch, as Oklahoma took advantage of five straight Oklahoma State turnovers. Hawkins hit a 3-pointer and Terrisha Osborn scored five straight points during a 12-0 run that put Oklahoma State on top 72-70 with 1:35 remaining. Rosalind Ross made two free throws with 25.4 seconds remaining in regulation to put the Sooners ahead 74-72. After a turnover by Oklahoma, Oklahoma State threw the ball in from halfcourt with 1.4 seconds left. OSU's Trisha Skibbe caught the pass and banked home a 5-footer at the buzzer to force overtime. In overtime, Oklahoma shot 5-of-6 from the foul line down the stretch to seal it.
TOUGH ROAD DOWN THE STRETCH
Oklahoma State has lost its last three games, but figure this ... in that three-game losing streak, OSU has lost by an average of four points, including two games that went into overtime. Two of the three games were on the road, two were against ranked teams, and the three teams have a combined record of 60-22.
MORE ON NEBRASKA
Nebraska is 12-16 overall this season and 4-11 in Big 12 Conference games. In fact, all four of the Huskers' league wins are over Kansas and Kansas State. NU has swept both Jayhawks (73-62 at Kansas, 49-46 at home) and the Wildcats (67-58 at home, 77-69 at Manhattan). Nebraska is led by senior Casey Leonhardt, who is averaging 13.4 points and 7.1 rebounds per contest. The 6-5 center is shooting 53.1 percent from the floor and 65.4 percent from the free-throw line. Freshman Shannon Howell is averaging 8.2 points and 3.2 assists per game. The Huskers are coached by Paul Sanderford who, in his fourth year with the program, has a record of 74-51. In his 19 seasons as a Division I head coach, Sanderford has a 439-171 overall record.
MISCELLANEOUS NOTES
- Oklahoma State scored a season-high 95 points vs. West Virginia, the most for the Cowgirls since a 95-point performance vs. Texas A&M in Stillwater on Feb. 11, 1998.
- OSU's 51.6 percent shooting vs. Texas A&M on Jan. 27 was a season high. It was also the highest since the Cowgirls shot 54.3 percent vs. the Aggies in Stillwater last season (Feb. 19).
- The Cowgirls had a season-high six blocked shots vs. Baylor in Stillwater, the most since OSU had six vs. Colorado last season in Boulder. Mandy Stuber led the Cowgirls with three, while Shelby Hutchens had a key block of a Sheila Lambert shot attempt at the buzzer to insure the win.
- Kara Faulk eclipsed the career 500-point milestone vs. Texas A&M. Her 15 points vs. Oklahoma gives her 564 points in her career. She has twice scored 24 points in a game this season, a career best.
- Chantoya Hawkins also eclipsed the same mark in the A&M game. After a career-best 26 points vs. Oklahoma Saturday night, she now has 553 points in her two-year career.
- OSU has limited its opponents to less than 60 points on seven occasions, and is 7-0 in those games. The Cowgirls have given up 70 or more points in just seven games this year.
- Kara Faulk picked up her sixth double-double of the season last Saturday night in the game vs. Oklahoma. It was her third in four games.
COWGIRL ATTENDANCE RANKS 43rd NATIONALLY
Oklahoma State has had 17,408 fans come through the turnstiles in the first eight games in Gallagher-Iba Arena, an average of 2,176 fans per game. It was bolstered mostly by a showing of 5,092 fans at the Oklahoma game on Feb. 10. That total was the third-most in Gallagher-Iba Arena history for a women's basketball game, and the sixth-most to ever watch a women's bedlam game in the state of Oklahoma. The average this season ranks OSU 43rd nationally in unofficial attendance this season. Texas Tech is the Big 12 leader and ranks second nationally with 12,770 fans per contest. Iowa State is second in the league and fourth nationally at 11,268.
COWGIRLS IN THE RPI Oklahoma State is ranked 48th in the Ratings Percentage Index published by College Basketball News on Feb. 26. The Cowgirls' schedule-strength rank (10th) is the third-toughest in the league behind Nebraska (seventh) and Oklahoma (ninth).
COACH DICK HALTERMAN
Dick Halterman is entering his 18th season as the head coach for the Oklahoma State Cowgirls, and brings with him a 314-216 career mark at OSU. Halterman has guided the Cowgirls to eight postseason appearances in the last 12 years, including seven NCAA Tournament appearances (last in 1996) and one Women's NIT appearance (1998). Under Halterman, 13 Cowgirls have been named first-team all-conference, while 31 student-athletes have achieved first-team academic all-conference status. He is a two-time conference Coach of the Year, and was the District V Coach of the Year in 1991. Halterman has taken two conference All-Star teams abroad, including August of 1999, when he led the Big 12 All-Stars on a tour of Finland and Sweden. That team finished with a 5-1 record. Here is a look at Halterman's year-by-year coaching record at Oklahoma State.
